Inland fish taco recommendations
I love fish tacos, some of the best I've had have been from small family run spots in coastal Mexican towns. I am planning a trip to Mexico in the new year that does not include a single coastal stop. I'll be in DF, Puebla, Cuernavaca, Oaxaca, Cuetzalan and possibly a few more spots in the region. Does anyone have any recommendations in any of those cites mentioned or somewhere nearby if you think it's worth a pilgrimage. Thanks!
Hardly a small family run spot, but in DF's Colonia Condesa the best coastal type seafood preparations are at Contramar. It's open only for comida; go early or make a reservation. The tostada with ahi was unforgettable. The pescada de talla, with red and green salsas, is a signature dish.
Your trip sounds great. There is no limit to the wonderful food you will find! If you search this site for each city there are many recommendations.
The pilgrimage-worthy bites that pop to mind include the tacos al pastor and gringos (al pastor with cheese) at Las Ranas in downtown Puebla.
In Cuetzalan, the local tlayudas - sort of like a corn tortilla stuffed with falafel - are worth seeking out at the market (the main market on Sundays is a pilgrimage itself) or in cafes. Also, the vanilla beans are a good souvenir.

Thank you for your thorough and thoughtful response! I looked at the menu Contramar has on their website and it looks outstanding - Thanks for the tip. I figure mom and pop style fish is going to be rare so far from the coast, a total shot in the dark.
There is no coincidence that the locations I've chosen will include wonderful food. Tacos al pastor. moles, tlayudas! I hope we can be Cuetzalan for a Sunday market, the timing will be challenging as we only have a short 2 weeks.
I'll report on any gems I find along the way.
Thank you for sharing.

I stay away from the most expensive restaurants when it comes to tacos - "keep it simple" is the advice I follow (and give).
The best seafood tacos are found - near the sea. Inland fare will not be as good, typically - but Mexico City is a bit different because lots of seafood is shipped there from the coastal areas.
Restaurant Canto de Sirenas in Colonia Tlaxpana is a classic and traditional seafood restaurant in the D.F. and you can find the seafood tacos there, as well as many other well-prepared, flavorful and reasonably priced seafood/fish dishes.
Also, at the city's former central fishmarket adjacent to Mercado Sonora - one block away - there are a score or more restaurants selling nothing but seafood. Mercado de pescados y mariscos de la Viga, on Calzada de la Viga.
For more information about Restaurant Canto de Sirenas, read a trip report of sorts I posted elsewhere: http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic....

Gracias, gomexico. Great trip report. That photo of pozole rojo from Casa de Toño is making me hungry. I'm excited at all the culinary offerings in the DF! Thanks for sharing.
