Favorite dish in Boston area - under $15

STL BOS Nov 13, 2009 07:25 AM

Although I have thoroughly enjoyed the "ten best things to eat in Boston" thread, I need a manageable (and affordable) go to list that I can start working my way through.

The only rule - you can only name ONE dish, the restaurant has to be in greater Boston and it must be less than $15. Any course (including desserts) is okay.

My pick - the spicy salted ribs at Great Taste in Chinatown.

One of the salads at Za: Hass Avocado, Black Bean, Tomato, Red Onion, Cheddar Cheese, Bread 'n' Butter Pickled Jalapeno, Red Pepper, and Cilantro Salad with Cumin-Lime Vinaigrette, Sour Cream, and Tortilla Crunch

Great choice. I'm not a huge fan of their pizza, but I always agree when my wife wants to go because I can get this salad.

I'm going to go with the tortellini soup at Alia in Winthrop. The taste, the smell, and simply the look of it is so good that I almost get weepy thinking about it.

Maybe the smoked blufish cakes at Highland Kitchen, or (when they have them) the grilled sardines at Rendezvous.

Not a dish but the Bahn Mi sandwich for $3.50 at Pho Viet in the old Super 88 food court. Also, a new favorite: the $14.95 double lobster special with scallion and ginger at China Star of Lowell. Oh, and one more: Ming's Bings, 3 dumpling sliders, duck, pork and cheeseburger at Blue Ginger's lounge, I think it is around $12.

I second, slightly differently.. the bahn mi at King Do down in Dot.. and and up-and-comer - the dolsot bibimbap at the H-Mart near Burlington - my rice was sizzling in that stone pot for like 10 minutes..

I made my first venture to H-Mart today. Major chaos! My stomach rumbled from the "food court" but it was too crowded to get close. I'llhave to try the bibimbap another time!

Most of the H-mart staff seems to eat there - the Korean-specific place on the far end. And yes, seating is tough.. I had to hover for a while near someone finishing their meal so we could score his table.

this is hard... but my favorite dish at the moment is the sautéed potato gnocchi with squash puree, asparagus and almonds at the Sel de La Terre in Natick. I think it might be $15.... maybe slightly higher- whoops.

This is primarily hard because most of my favorite dishes are under $15 -- the aforementioned banh mi at Pho Viet is probably my single favorite thing to eat in the city of Boston -- but right at this moment, I'll say the arancini at Galleria Umberto. Heck, you could get one of everything on the menu and pay less than $15.

The dry-fried beef chow fun at Peach Farm is about $6-7 and probably my favorite ONE dish. I would also consider a Speed's dog with everything for $7 as well.

I'd have to say the carnitas burrito from Villa Mexico. It is more of a take-out place with only two real seats in Grampy's but it is oh so delicious!

This is a tough one, and some of my faves are already listed, but one dish I really love is the Pork and Taro at Taiwan Cafe, and at $6 or $7 you can throw in some scallion pancakes and still come in under $15.

On the subject of Szechuan, my pick is Zoe's Chicken Chongqing Style (10.95)--nice fried nuggets, lots of dried peppers, and crisp-chewy slices of ginger and garlic.

My favorite would change by the minute, but just this minute I'm thinking fondly of the weekend-only beef birria at Taqueria Jalisco in Eastie. $9 and feeds 2 (or makes good leftovers).

why only one dish :) ? there are many great dishes, depending on whether one is in the mood for shrimp/chicken/pork/beef/lamb etc or fried/braised/raw etc.

There are tons of great dishes in Boston for under $15.

                                                      My two favorites:

Lots of good ideas already, at below $15..and CTown can keep you busy for a long time..:)

If you include lunch, Grotto has a gnocchi/short ribs dish that's great. It's very rich and definitely not a summer dish but as it gets colder, I'll put it on my lunch list.

                                                        Few $ more at dinner.
