Sushi/Chinese near Gershwin Theatre?
Hi everyone, I hope one of you food connoisseurs can help me out. I'm taking my girlfriend to an 8pm showing of Wicked on Dec. 12th for her birthday and was looking for a nice sushi or chinese restaurant for a pre-show dinner (probably 5:30 reservations). Ruby Foos looks like fun, but honestly I don't know much about the area. Price isn't really too much of an issue. Thanks in advance!

Ruby Foos's is a very popular tourist-oriented mixed asian (Chinese, Sushi, etc.) restaurant. The food is very americanized, which may be a plus or a minus from your pov. We've occasionally stopped at the bar, pre-theatre, for a drink and an app or two - not great but not terrible (I like their ribs, in fact). It's big, crowded, and noisy with over-the-top decor. Convenient to the Gershwin.
Since GSI shut, there's not any Chinese restaurant in the immediate area that I would recommend except for Wu Liang Ye, which is farther east (48th between 5th and 6th); it's very good Sichuanese cuisine, and the atmosphere/service is OK.
Totally in another direction - just fyi - our favorite pre-theatre choice in that area (on 50th) is Toloache - upscale Mexican and very good (my wife likes their ceviches, which is as close as they get to sushi :)). Right across from them is Natsumi, a sushi-oriented restaurant; however, we've never been there and can't speak to its quality.

I couldn't tell you about sushi, but I'd advise you to go a little distance south and east to Szechuan Gourmet, 39th St. between 5th and 6th, if you like Sichuan food and like it spicy. If you prefer to stay closer to the theater, there are two good Thai restaurants on/near 9th Av.: Wondee Siam and Pam's Real Thai. For some reason, this site won't give the right link for Pam's Real Thai. It's on 49th just west of 9th. I prefer Wondee, if you stick to the "Secret Thai" menu and convince them to make it really spicy and Thai-style, but Pam's is also worthwhile.
