downtown SD tonight

dimsumgirl Nov 12, 2009 03:36 PM

Looking for a place for an inexpensive casual dinner for two tonight downtown or on the way from La Jolla to the airport to pick up a friend. Thinking casual, maybe pizza (prefer thin crust) or Italian or??? Suggestions? TIA!

Right down the road from Lindberg you have Pizza Nova. Sammys is also close by at Liberty Station.

It's not authentic Italian but I like Volare (Barnett Ave.) for what they are doing. It's an old place which doesn't look great but the food I had there was surprisingly good.

Honkman, can you tell us more about Volare? My husband continually jokes/threatens we are going to eat there but we are too leery of the looks of the place (like it was bombed), and the location (next to the "adult" bookstore).

You should try Volare. It is really nothing fancy (or terrible authentic) but I like their calamari steak or veal scallopini. Their minestrone (which you will get for free with the entrees is actually pretty good). The place doesn't look nice but they have a nice, friendly service. (We found the restaurant through the Entertainment book years ago and still like to go there from time to time)

Just remembered that A Radiused Corner had a post in his blog about it:

It's a good post which nicely captures Volare

Honkman, my husband and I love Volare. Total hole-in-the-wall joint, but they boast friendly grandmotherly service and a mean pesto sauce.

If I found myself in that area, I'd be going to Tender Greens at Liberty Station.

Clearly late but Bronx Pizza is thee definative Pizza in town and definitely fits the casual, cheap theme too. Maybe next time.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Thank you sdnativa-- We went to Pizza Nova last night. Traffic was really heavy and it took us longer to get there than we anticipated but they were friendly and held our reservation for us. Food was very good and at a decent price; service was mediocre but the proximity to the airport was perfect. I have a few more meals here in SD before I have to leave for Northern California and have noted the other suggestions and hope to hit up some of them.

Ditto on Bar Basic; my wife and I never miss it when we visit San Diego. The pizzas are wonderful, salads, cocktails and wine first-rate and the service excellent. Pretty inexpensive, too!!!

Your criteria (casual, close to the airport, inexpensive) all cry Tender Greens. For $10 you could have Grilled Flank Steak salad on Butter lettuce (you can also have the Flank Steak as a sandwich) or Chitpotle Chicken Salad which has avocado, cotija cheese, etc. This place is located in Liberty Station and is getting busier and busier each time we go. The word is out!
