Dallas have a fish market?

I am talking about the kind that have whole fish and tons of fish. I moved here from Washington DC and haven't found any place like the Maine Ave Fish market, which is open year round and just amazing. You can probably get like 8 kinds of shrimp and the freshest seafood (blue crabs ofcourse). Before that I was in Pittsburgh, and you could make your way to Wholey's fish market in the Strip Districts, and same thing --- GIANT building with just a ton of fish.

Central Market has a decent selection, but just outrageously priced, and you can't really buy a whole fish usually.

    1. What species are you looking for? There are several nice fishmongers in the Dallas Area. TJ's Seafood market being one of the favorites. I would also try one of the larger Asian markets like Super H Mart where many of the fare is fresh and swimming at the time of order. The prices are much less at the Asian markets, as well.

How are the prices at TJ's? I have checked out the Hong Kong mart in Garland. It's okay. I know the Super H Marts are usually really good, but I live close to downtown, and I think it's a bit of a hike to get to the SUper H Mart.

TJ's has some high end items, and some economical items. I would say they fair much better than the good folks at Central Market. Also try Whole Foods. Super H is a small trek, but in the evenings it is not very busy and the drive to George Bush and Old Denton probably would take about 20 minutes going down 35 or the tollway.

The selection is rather abundant at Super H. More so that Hong Kong, and about the same driving time. The produce is much nicer as well. I think Hong Kong is a shell of its former self, but still a good resource. I recall a time when you could buy freshly prepared whole crispy ducks in Hong Kong for about 9 dollars.

            2. I shop the Lomo Alto Wholefoods and they do have a nice selection (for Dallas) of fresh fish. They usually have fresh whole red snapper for sale but, I've never bought it. They have whole fresh sardines and (farm raised) whole trout that are very good. My favorite fish there is the fresh, (not previously frozen) gulf shrimp at $14.99 LB. And, they'll happily remove the shell and devein them, too!
And yes, their seafood is not cheap.

                1. Dallas is land locked so no fresh fish is going to be cheap because all fresh fish must catch a flight here!! On-the-other-hand, but not cheap, there is Rex's Seafood Market on almost the southwest corner of Lovers Lane and Inwood.
