Jade Garden/Chinatown

A few of us met at the bar at the new W Hotel..hopping at 6:30 and headed over to Jade Garden in Chinatown.

A little more upscale than most of the other places in Chinatown..Some hits'' some misses. I don't think any of us were blown away by the meal. Some of the fault lies with me because we didn't "push" for a translation of the all Chinese menu, but did cobble together some good dishes, mostly by pointing..:) and remembering the favorites from the Phoenix review.

I'll go back because I did see some dishes that I haven't seen elsewhere..ex, shelled lobster in yellow chivesbut for now, Peach Farm is still my favorite for this style of food.

Rather than retyping, I'll just link to my photos..

    1. The hot and sour soup was excellent. I'd take the lobster prep at Jo Jo any day.

Hard to go to this place over Peach Farm.

        1. tried their spicy salt (aka salt and pepper) baby live shrimp, as good as Peach Farms if not better. 1/2 lb easily feeds 2 or more.

            1. i had the "beef tail in red wine" off the lunch menu a few months ago. a plate of large meaty oxtails piled high on a mound of steamed white rice and topped with a soy-based brown sauce. the oxtails were perfectly braised and contained a fair amount of fat and meat that pulled away easily from the bones. the sauce was rich with strong undertones of red wine. a generous portion for under $10 including tax and tip

I had the same thing yesterday for lunch. It was like $8.05 after tax (I got take out.) Portion size was good, I got about 8 pieces of Oxtail. It came in the sauce described as above, you would think soy sauce and red wine don't mix very well, but they definitely pull it off here. Also comes with some carrots and napa cabbage. I wouldn't make a special trip for this, but if you are in the mood for oxtail or if you are going to Jade Garden, then I would definitely get it.

thanks for the oxtail in red wine recommendation. i had it for lunch today and it was perfect in this bitter cold weather!

I went here again yesterday. I called in my order for pickup (12:35) and showed up 15 mins later (12:50). The order wasn't ready and I had to wait another 25 mins for my order (1:15). Some of the oxtail was extremely dry and crunchy, like it wasn't braised in liquid. Most of the pieces were ok, but I have no idea how they made those other pieces like that. Also instead of Napa cabbage, I got Iceberg lettuce. Please just leave that out if you are going to put that in, cooked lettuce is disgusting.

I am really disappointed as I love oxtail and there are so few places to get it. I would be willing to try them again in the future, but I will definitely have to wait a bit to get this experience out of my head.

Counterpoint: cooked iceberg lettuce is highly delicious.

Blech! Something both my parents inexplicably loved and forced on us as children! They do that with romaine too. I'm with tyson....it's unnatural and should never be.

I still have not made it to Jade Garden yet. I need to head over here to try their lunch specials one of these days.

                            2. I kept meaning to try this place some time. Does it offer rice and noodle dishes? Does it serve mostly Cantonese cuisine?

                                1. re: y2000k

Looking at their takeout menu; there are 2 pages of various rice and noodle dishes..at very fair prices.

Mostly Cantonese but the hot/sour soup was exceptional.
