Help with a special birthday cake

m

I am always the cake baker for friends birthdays. I tend to know what they like and tailor the cake to their preferences...ginger cake, guiness cake etc. My husband volunteered me to make a cake for a coworkers wife who I do not know very well and we will be attending her dinner party on Saturday night. Anyone have a WOW cake. Doesn;t have to be gourmet or hard to do, just one that is a crowd pleaser.
Thanks,

The Elvis cake has been my go-to cake for dinners like this and never fails to get "wow's" from everyone. I use half cream cheese in the peanut butter frosting.

I also like the lemon layer cake with lemon mascarpone frosting on epicurious.com--more work but definitely worth it.

I would do this double chocolate cake. It is fabulous, and with 1329 reviews and a four-fork rating (top rating) on Epicurious, I think it would definitely work for your purposes:
