Flatiron / Gramercy birthday dinner tonight

carochinha Nov 12, 2009 10:54 AM

Looking for an unpretentious (but not casual / pub environement) restaurant with great food, but of course. Dinner is with my Father and husband - we're late bloomers, very recently married. We have after dinner plans near 27th & 5th Ave. With the exception of prices a la Per Se, price is not really an issue.

Any lively and reliable places you would recommend for a celebratory dinner?

Love EMP. I think its unpretentiopus. I go in jeans all the time and eat at the bar. The bartenders are great. Ate at Bar Stuzzichini the other night and it was fantastic. Love Tabla too Ugh let us know how the night turned out.

      We wound up at Resto.

Cons: food was truly good. Brussel Sprouts as an appetizer (hey, it's his birthday, give me the man what he wants). My husband also liked the red by the glass - the server allowed us a bottle though it was not a bottled offer and charged us appropriately. Dad had the trout special, served with some chourico and chestnut sides - tasted good but was too close to a stuffing than a side. I had milk marinated pork tenderloin with purple fingerlings and leeks I think. Good but just a bit undercooked. Sauce didn't add much, it could have stood on its own. Husband had the chicken special, well presented.

Very happy overall with the service, though a little rushed towards the end as the restaurant was filling up. However, they were accomodating with our wine request and with surprise birthday candles on waffles. Only con was perhaps how loud the room became as it filled. I would return for drinks or an early dinner to avoid the decibel levels.

Thanks again for your recommendations and help.

You MUST try Giorgio's of Grammercy -- 21st Street between Park Av. So. & Broadway. A very pretty place, with absolutely delicious food and great/friendly service. It has a neighborhood vibe, yet feels special. Prices are extremely reasonable and they have 1/2 price happy hour drinks at the bar. I guarantee you will love it.

I'll throw a second vote out there for Giorgio's of Gramercy as an occasion-worthy yet pretense-free destination. The kitchen there turns out some exquisite seafood dishes, in my experience. Note that prices run in the $20-$30 per entree range, which some might classify as moderately expensive, rather than extremely reasonable. Still, it's an excellent value, and the atmosphere sounds like what you're looking for.

Re: Resto - The haute euro-comfort food menu is plenty ambitious, but I've found the atmosphere to be a bit harried and off-putting at prime dinner hours. Still, if the menu appeals to your tastes it's a solid neighborhood option.

You might also want to try Veritas or even Tabla, both of which are certainly celebration-worthy.

Throw in another vote for Giorgio's.I love this place for exactly the type of dinner you are looking for.A comfortable, casual restaurant with very good food and service. The decor is nice. It's a fairly dark room.Nice wood bar when you first come in.I've eaten there twice this year and loved it both times.CalJack summed it up nicely with the "Occasion-worthy yet pretense-free" description.

Thanks for both of these. As a third option, any thoughts on Resto?
