early early morning breakfast... with a view
hey chowhounders
trying to come up with a fabulous view for an early morning (??see the sunrise??) breakfast in west hollywood or downtown
-
The Four Seasons on Doheny serves breakfast every morning on the 4th floor. It's a beautiful view of the city with wonderful food. I highly suggest it.
I eat at the BH Hotel every Sunday and there is absolutely no view....unless you like sitting on the ground floor looking at trees. -
Great question.
The City Club downtown opens for breakfast at 7, has arguably the best view in town, and serves a very creditable breakfast. (You have to be or go with a member to get in, but leaving that detail aside...) At certain times of the year (late October and early January, for instance), LA sunrise is at or after 7, and during those rare periods, I guess that would be my choice.

re: ipsedixit
I know this isn't the area you are looking for but maybe my post will inspire others to come up with places in your requested area. In Pasadena, we have Brookside Golf Course which is a public course and they have a decent restaurant looking out onto the golf course and surrounding mountains. Not a bad way to start the day...

Nice challenge. The hour obviously makes this a higher degree of difficulty. So I think hotel restaurants are gonna be your best bet.
A few to consider might be the Polo Lounge, Mondrian (Asia de Cuba), Roof Garden at The Peninsula BH, or The Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower Hotel.
I believe all of these serve breakfast, but not positive they're all dishing at sunrise, so definitely double check. And perhaps others can help confirm or deny which offer the right kind of view at that time of the day.

re: wutzizname
They do serve breakfast on the patio. It's very pleasant. I eat there almost every Saturday and Sunday morning. However, the patio is surrounded by trees and is built on one of the lower elevations of the property (the Beverly Hills Hotel is built on a slope), and there is not much of a view. The OP asked for "a fabulous view." Unless the OP is really into patios, the Polo Lounge does not have a fabulous view.
I think your suggestion of the Sunset Tower Hotel is spot on for the OP. There is a very good view to the east.

re: wutzizname
I think wutzizname is onto something. Your best bet is probably a hotel, and the key to a view is to find one with an upper floor dining room. You may have more luck downtown than in WeHo.... although many of the hotels I know downtown have the restaurants on the ground floor to attract non-guests.
But based on your criteria, my guess is that you're setting up an extraordinarily well-planned liaison, and you need a piece de resistance for a proper sendoff.
I'd go with the Polo Lounge or the Roof Garden. While there's not a view per se, the increasing light will bring your day to life, and your attitude while driving away will be one of peace and well-being.
The food's okay. Nothing great.
