I have an Edisonian recommendation....it's NOT at Le Pain Quotidien.

agree with you there , especially in the suburbs, where i am , overrated and full nyc prices. although the croissants and pastries are good, they should be great at these prices. the croissants at whole food in westchester come from the city (i think) and used to be very good but i have not had in a long time

Having tried a lot of croissants in Manhattan, my current favorite is La Bergamote in Chelsea. I like it more than Petrossian, Claude's, Ceci-Cela, Le Madeleine and other pastry shops. The croissants are very light, buttery and flakey.

The best croissant I think is at Cannelle Patisserie in Queens. All their other stuff is also very yummy.

Go to Patisserie Salzburg in Rye, NY. Owner Manfred was born and raised in Austria. His bakery is authentic with no shortcuts.
