Cognac burns my palate

OK maybe this is totally obvious and stupid but I was at a bar this weekend and I decided that instead of having my usual cheap gin and tonics I would upgrade and have a few Remy Martins instead. There were delicious but now it's Wednesday and I still can't brush the back of my upper teeth because my palate in inflamed and sore. Does everyone have this problem? Does one get it from neat whiskey as well?

    1. If you're used to G&T, drinking straight cognac (or any full-strength 80 proof liquor) is putting anywhere from two to eight times higher alcohol concentration into your mouth. If you're not used to that, yeah, you're going to feel it, though usually more as it's going down your throat than in your mouth. But your mouth is still sore three or four days days later? I'd have your dentist check you for gum or palate disease. Seriously.

        1. I agree with BobB. Nothing (except perhaps burning hot tea/soup) should do damage to the mouth that lingers for more than a day.

If anything, alcohol will sting initially when going down -- then the anaesthetic effect takes place. When nerve endings are saturated, they're numbed; not sensitized.

            1. Do any other fermented/malt beverages bother you? You could have a sulfite allergy, which would explain why gin doesn't bother you.
