Local Asian fish store is selling sea scallops in the shell, however they shells all seem to be partially open. Is this normal or is it an indication that they are not fresh? They are behind glass so it is not easy to pick them up to see if they will close.

They should be fresh, ask the person behind the counter to handle them, if they close immediately then they are fresh, if there is no reaction I'd say pass.

they are probably much more expensive than those without, since you're paying for the shell (the entire way through the supply chain). i'd be curious of the cost comparison.
