Sunday Brunch recommendations - St. Paul to Hudson?

We are throwing a surprise 70th birthday brunch for my mother. It has been a long time since I have had Sunday brunch. What is recommended in the east Minneapolis-St. Paul metro, as far east as Hudson? Default is Lake Elmo Inn.

Not so much concerned with cost as quality.

  1. Your default is my all time favorite....absolutely delicious. My wife and I have actually enjoyed the Sunday brunch at Granite City on 2 different occassions (the one attached to Rosedale Mall). It had been recommended to us by 2 different people, and to be honest I was pretty impressed. They've got a "build your own" bloody mary option that's kind of fun, and I thought the food was above average. Quite a few food options (including different benedict options), and I believe they do a special of the week that rotates. It's by no means on the same level as Lake Elmo, but it's not bad.

    1. WA Frost in St. Paul has a very nice Sunday brunch that would be "older Minnesotan friendly." In terms of pure quality, Meritage in downtown St. Paul would be at the top of the heap, but it is a French place at heart so your guests would need to like that style of food.

I was in Stillwater recently and saw a couple new places that looked very nice, but I don't remember the names.

      1. When i lived out there I used to love going to Sunsets in woodbury. The food is pretty cheap ( i would compare it to champps or redstone) and they had a lot of good stuff. The wild rice soup is awesome. I am not sure if they still do brunch there but back a few years ago I really liked it :)

There is a smaller cafe/bistro on Selby Ave called Bon Vie - they do more breakfast/brunch items but it is good quality (quiches, the best eggs benedict), homemade caramel/pecan rolls. Suitable for all ages - but depending on crowd size-you might need to call ahead.

Otherwise, I'd also say W.A. Frost.

Thanks for your suggestions so far. To clarify, I am looking for a traditional AYCE Sunday brunch. Not really my thing, but the more senior members of my party want to go that route.

I can't get into Lake Elmo Inn with my large party, so am think a private room at the M Street Cafe in the St. Paul Hotel. Does anybody have any feedback on this brunch?

it's in the basement -- a little dark and no windows, but I've always enjoyed the breakfast food there. And the service is friendly. We did the Sunday brunch last year. My recollection was that there were some really good items and some not so good items. Pretty typical for a large AYCE. You could do a lot worse.

Kozlak's Royal Oak Restaurant has an excellent Sunday New Orleans Jazz Brunch.

We do the M Street Cafe brunch pretty often. It's pretty good for a buffet (not really my thing either, but it's quick enough for the kids and quiet enough for grandpa to be able to hear)!

Ambience is comfortable and clean, and the service is consistently good.

          2. Stone Ridge Golf Club in Stillwater (but it's right off 94) has an outstanding Sunday brunch and bloody mary bar.
