I am getting married in 2010 and I am shopping for my wedding cake. I went to a bridal salon yesterday and just found out wedding cakes can be so ridiculously expensive. Now, I am thinking of getting a small and nice wedding cake and pairing it with a cheaper sheet cake. My plan is to the small and nice wedding cake for display, and the sheet cakes will be in the kitchen or backstage. Once we cut the nice cake in front of the guests, the caterer will rush all the cakes in the back for cutting. I think this is really cut out cost for the wedding cake since sheet cakes are usually less expensive. My concern is to find get the small cake and the sheet cake that has the exact look (same color for cake and icing) to make is less obvious. Do you know any pastry shop that can do this (and at a reasonable price of course :p) ?

I am also getting married next year and after having discussed cakes with over 5 pastry shops and found out how outrageous the prices are, I almost gave up. Until someone gave me this referral: Les Délices d'Amandine. http://delicesdamandine.com/
It's a small pastry shop, a front for a large pastry caterer who delivers mainly to restaurants and hotels. The prices are therefore a lot more decent.
You can ask for Michel, and I suggest you also request to have a tasting... it's free and they were very good.

Any bakery will do that. Just order a small cake and as many sheet cakes as you need. That way they will cover the sheet cake and wedding cake in the same colour fondant.
