alkapal Nov 9, 2009 05:33 AM

they helped me to do quick identification of who has posted (assuming they have a unique avatar). why did this feature go away? please consider bringing it back. thanks.

(sorry if this topic has been addressed elsewhere; if so, just point me there).

I second that. It made it easy for me to see if specific posters were participating in a thread.

A third on that...i actually used it quite often. I hope it comes back.

They're off, on, off again, on again, and off... I really wish they would bring them back and leave them alone! On really long threads with many contributors, they are so useful for finding out quickly whether you've already contributed and would be repeating yourself. With all of the tecnicacal problems contributers have to constantly contend with, to have this kind of "man made" problem just says to me that no one gives a damn about what kinds of things encourage "regulars" to stay around.

      2. Gio RE: alkapal Nov 10, 2009 05:39 PM

Well... I still see them. In the upper right corner under the heading, "Who's Talking?"
I have my zoom level set to 150 just so it fits my 19" screen without having to view the right side stuff so I have to slide the bottom scroll bar way over to the right.... but they're there.

How bizarre, Gio. I assume the others posting here see the same thing I do, which is that the "Who's Talking?" with the avatars is now gone, replaced by "Photo Gallery," and a rotating feature of Chow content to click on (right now, "The Most Delicious Sandwiches").

yep, it's the photo gallery here, too.

why isn't the chow team weighing in?

Well guess what.... The avatars are gone now from my screen too, replaced by Most Popular...stories and videos. 8 of them.

Cue the theme from Twilight Zone.

Is this on purpose or a bug? I which someone from chow/chowhound would reply.

This was one of the few features of this site that was happily praised when the software was first installed. It is very usefule to people who read the posts.

If this isn't a bug, please bring back the "who's talking' section.

I wonder if this a browser-specific glitch. I see them at the top right of my screen in this thread, for example - FF 3.0

I see the same thing (Photo Gallery, as I posted above) using both IE and FF, on two different computers, one PC and one Mac, so who knows.

Maybe something was being worked on. Earlier, the links were missing as well. I was stewing that posts I liked just had the word 'link' with the actual link gone.

Posting about glitches is sort of like talking to God, eh? There's no direct answer but sometimes your prayers get answered.

I don't think anything was done to bring them back, I think you got lucky, rworange. It seems very random. I am actually not especially invested in the feature, but I would much rather have it than more links to Chow magazine content. The avatars are potentially useful to me, the stuff that replaced them is not.

                      Thanks for your feedback.

The avatar disappearing and reappearing is due to some testing that we have been doing the last couple weeks. Do not despair, there are some things that we know can be improved so we appreciate the feedback and always want to hear about the features that users love. Once the testing is over we will incorporate this feedback into the summary of the findings.

                              Ditto

In this trhead there was a response two months ago that it was a temporary situation.

"The avatar disappearing and reappearing is due to some testing that we have been doing the last couple weeks. Do not despair, there are some things that we know can be improved so we appreciate the feedback and always want to hear about the features that users love. Maybe I read that wrong. Maybe it means Chow decided to get rid of them due to lack of poster feedback.

The problem with that is not that that active feedback is strongly discouraged on this site. Once a problem is reported and there are a few confirming reports this is a problems, Chowhounds, for the most part, know to sit back and wait ... and wait. .

Unfortunately the testing was scheduled to run through January so quickly putting avatars back onto the site wasn't possible.

However the avatars have returned! We value eveyone's feedback and wanted to let you all know that we heard the request - that is what was meant by the earlier comment posted.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to work on improving the site.

Keep the feedback coming - we are listening but sometimes can't get things turned around as quickly as we all wish.

i still wonder how you believe that this sentence of bureaucratese : "Once the testing is over we will incorporate this feedback into the summary of the finding"

communicates a message of: "we heard your request" (and implicity) "not only did we hear it, we're working to fix the problem and return the avatars."
