Restaurant Suggestion - Colborne Lane or Canoe?

s

We're suppose to do a tasting menu at Colborne Lane, but I am wondering if we should change it and go to Canoe instead. The reason being that we've gone to Colborne Lane before; this is one of the few times we're able to have dinner on a weeknight; we've never gone to Canoe before, and I believe it's only open on weeknights.

We've already made the reservations for Colborne Lane, but I am wondering if we should switch. On purely a food level, which do you think is the better resto? Our reservations are for Monday evening.

Go to Canoe and try to secure a window seat!!

If Monday evening is tonight then it would be pretty rude to cancel on such short notice, assuming that you have spoken with the house about arranging a suitable tasting menu, etc.

However, if Monday is a week away (or more), I'd definitely switch it up and book at Canoe instead. Gorgeous view, good scene, excellent food (and very different from CL!).

I believe CL nightly tasting menu is fixed ahead of time since there is a printed version that was attached to the a la carte menu. Any allergy concern, likes or dislikes will be decided when the wait staff takes the order whence the tasting menu will be fixed. As such, I don't think one should be too concern about creating havoc to the kitchen with a short notice cancellation. I recall once, I need to cancel a 7 pm reservation at 3 in the afternoon at the 3* Alain Ducasse and it was fine with them.
Good luck and have fun! And do report back!

Fair enough... I thought I recalled stoned's date as having some dietary restrictions so I wondered if the "supposed to" meant that the dinner had been negotiated ahead of time Otherwise, I take your point.

Yeah, Rabbit is right. Good memory.

She's still a vegetarian. I did e mail Claudio Aprile and ask him if a vegetarian tasting is possible. I get the impression after talking to some people, that this is a common request, and doesn't cause the kitchen too much trouble.

And yes, the reservations are for tonight.

Rabbit, is the scene at Canoe better on certain nights?

What are your favourite dishes at Canoe?

Canoe is open for lunch and dinner M-F, just closed on the weekends for private functions.

I would do Canoe. For me, it's just a better experience all around. Colborne Lane was a bit too precious for me, although I can't say anything bad about it. But after eating at this type of restaurant (Colborne Lane) in other cities, I find it pales in comparison.

And I disagree about cancelling the day of if you want, as long as it's an acceptable amount of time, ie. done several hours in advance, not an hour before. Tasting menus are not done for each individual diner, so they are not putting the restaurant 'out'. They will just have 2 less people for dinner.

I am starting to think Canoe would be better. We went to Grace last week, and that didn't agree with us, so I definitely want something really good. I think CL only opens for dinner, so they never pick up the phone until 4 pm, at least in my experience. Reservations are at 7...

I don't want to be rude, but at the same time I want a really good meal.

I just reviewed Canoe's menu and they literally do not have one appetizer or main listed that does not involve meat or fish. I'm sure they can make accommodations (and I don't know whether your date eats fish/seafood), but there is ostensibly very little for her on that menu! I was a little shocked.

As for the last-minute cancel... in the end, you're going to be dropping a lot of money and you want to go someplace that really feels right. If you want to go to Canoe tonight then you should absolutely do so. Let us know how it goes!!

I wouldn't be too worried about canceling. Leave a message if that's an option.

Canoe should be a really great dinner. Call to make a reservation, I'm sure you'll get in ok on a Monday night these days and do mention any special requests. They have always been very accommodating in altering dishes to suit the tables wishes in my experience. Let us know how it goes.
