Does anyone know where in Montreal I can find the berbere spice mix and niter kibbeh spiced clarified butter used in Ethiopian cooking?

p.s. I know it's possible to make these at home or mail order, but at the moment I'm looking for a local source to buy them pre-made, so please, no recipe referrals or mail-order sources.

Thanks!

Olive et Épices's berbere spice mix is wonderful -- pricey but wonderful -- possibly the best of their many spice blends (which is saying something). Opening a canister and inhaling a whiff could qualify as an aromatheraphy session. Note that you have to grind it yourself, which may seem like a pain but actually ensures maximum flavour and aroma.

Dunno about the butter.

Thanks, carswell - appreciate the rec for the berbere! Maybe I'll check out some of the shops along St-Denis near the JTM next time I'm up there - I think there might be some African grocery stores along there, maybe one of them will have the niter kibbeh... or maybe I'll just suck it up and make a batch at some point. ;-)

Yeah, I know it is not helpful to say "just make it yourself". But for what it is worth, it is pretty easy to make very nice Niter Kibbeh, especially once you find some nice spices!

But did you check out Akhavan? I have found fresh injera there, so I wouldn't be surprised if they had other Ethiopian ingredients...

Thanks, moh - I'll definitely check out Akhavan soon. It did occur to me after I posted that since they do stock injera, maybe they'd also have berbere, or even (gasp) niter kibbeh. I'll report back after I've had a look.
