I am looking for a place to go for my 18th birthday that is not terribly expensive but is different or fun. If you have any suggestions in the LA area, please let me know!

how expensive is not terribly expensive? how many people? any preference to cuisine or dislikes? any particular area, or just all of greater los angeles?

without any further info, and just going off of the request for different or fun, you might look into....

Dar Maghreb for eating with your hands moroccan and belly dancing, though Moun of Tunis is same cuisine but cheaper.

maybe you'd like Palms Thai for the Thai Elvis

you could opt for Korean BBQ or Shabu Shabu or Pho

plenty of interesting choices on Sawtelle

...with more details, you'll probably get some more helpful responses...

It would help if you mentioned cuisines that you're interested in, cuisines that you want to stay away from, and the specific area of LA you're looking to be in. It would also help for you to specify what you mean by "not terribly expensive" because $50 per person is considered expensive for some, but not by others.

Happy 18th! I don't know what is fun in your definition but Royal/T Cafe is different because it's a cafe (with servers dressed in maid costumes) and an art gallery. Currently they have the Hello Kitty Three Apples exhibit. If you are a fan of HK or Japanese culture, you'll like it.

I actually did dar mahgreb one year...looking for something fun like that. I am looking to invite about 15 people and stay under $1000. Anything in the greater LA area is fine and I really don't have a preference as far as cuisine is concerned.

Assuming that this is for a son, most teenage boys enjoy Benihana but I think their tables are limited to 8 each:

http://www.benihana.com/

Korea BBQ might be the way to go as they can all cook their own food. I am not that familiar with Koreatown; however, a private room might produce the party experience your looking for. Tahoe Galbi appears to have a private room which would very comfortably sit 16 at one table (the chairs in the picture appear to be maximizally squished together):

If your group have very healthy teenage appetites, they also have an all-you-can-eat option for $17.99 (16 X $17.99 = $288 + extra charge for the private room ?):
