Best Italian in Midtown or Upper East Side

We are heading to NYC next month to celebrate my 40th birthday and see the city at Christmas time. A great Italian dinner is at the top of our to do list. What is the best Italian restaurant in Midtown or Upper East Side? Price is not an issue, but the less expensive the better.....also extra points for a romantic atmosphere.

We know that good food in NYC can pay expensive. We are prepared to pay if we need to. If there is a great spot that doesn't cost and arm and a leg that is better. Pretty simple concept to me.

I think the two best options are Alto, which serves high-end Northern Italian, and Marea, which serves refined seafood-focused Italian. Both are quite upscale and expensive (Alto has a $79 prix fixe, Marea is $89 prix fixe) and are in the top echelon of Italian restaurants in NYC.
