I'll be driving this stretch of highway in a couple of weeks, final destination CA. This will be my last taste of the South for quite a while, so I'm looking for one last opportunity to get made-from-scratch country cooking. I don't want BBQ, but I want a place that cooks up a large spread of fresh (not from cans) veggies, such as collards, rutabagas, black eyed peas, mustard greens, creamed corn, okra, etc. As an example of what I'm looking for, see this photo from a recent buffet lunch I had at Jones Kitchen in Jesup, GA - http://www.chow.com/uploads/5/4/2/386245_photo.20091105010920.jpg

The Old Country Store in Jackson, TN sounds like just what you're looking for. It's just of I-40 on the west side of Jackson. It is a buffet, but they make everything from scratch fresh everyday. They even buy from local farmers whenever they can, so they always have the good stuff. Their crackling cornbread was one of Garden & Gun's 100 things to eat before you die. They do them as hoecakes, and they normally have collards, turnip greens, and mustard greens on the buffet, so you can pick your poison.
