Shiva Natarajan -- owner of Malabar Hill in Elmsford and restaurants in NYC, Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk, Westport and Brewster -- is planning to open a Mexican restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Oporto on East Hartsdale Avenue, according to Greenburgh town supervisor Paul Feiner. Expected opening in February 2010.

Meanwhile, try truly authentic Mexican *nearby* in White Plains at:
-- Mariachi Loco, in Olympic Plaza, 394 Central Park Ave. [http://mariachilocoinc.com/]
-- Gourmet Laguna, formerly Flores Deli, just off Central Park Ave. at 10 Cross St.
or
-- Cancun Delights, 16 East Post Road, near White Plains Hospital.

Adios for now.

Good Mexican would be welcome.

I also noticed today that there was an announcement for a new restaurant on Central Avenue in Hartsdale. I can't remeber the names of the two other places which occupied that space, but the outside has been repainted and today there was a sign with the name of a cafe.

Coming soon at 20 North Central Avenue, the sign in the window says, is Caffé Azzurri Wine Bar and Restaurant. A new Google Maps listing says it will be "New American cuisine with Italian flar [sic]." Website at www.caffeazzurri.com is not yet live.

Mariachi Loco is authentic surman? I've never eaten there so am not disputing just never struck me as such although can't say why. What have you had there and what would you recommend? Would you go out of your way for it? Is the food as good as say Sunshine Deli, also in WP or my current fave - El Charrito, the taco truck in Stamford?

Far be it for me to judge the authenticity of Mexican food but I did not enjoy the tacos at Mariachi Loco. It was too greasy, meat was tough and lacked flavor. In the area my favorite is Azteca Deli (formerly Cali Tex-Mex) in Elmsford because it's close by and they do an excellent carne enchilada taco. If El Charrito was closer I'd be a frequent customer. Sunshine Deli is very good but I only go if Azteca is closed. La Puebla across the street from Sunshine is notch below. I used to like Azteca in Mt Kisco but it's too far and last few times have been disappointing. Don't forget about Roberto's on E Post Rd. Looks like I need to try Gourmet Laguna and Cancun Delights.

Yes it is. Clientele, cuisine and atmosphere are all very Mexican. Try soft tacos -- al pastor, carnitas and cesina -- for starters. Yes. I would go out of my way to eat there. Have not been to El Charrito but ate from many a great taco truck in my L.A. days.
