just to clarify...

THe couple wants to sit down for dinner pre-theatre, but within a budget. Vice versa, kelari, and toloache came up in other posts...but would like other choice, possible asian. The couple can spend up to $100 including tax tip and one drink or beer per person.

That's not that cheap. I was going to recommend Wondee (particularly their' "secret Thai" menu, ordered Thai-style and really spicy), which has no atmosphere and would cost about $45 for two. A step up in decor would be Pam's Real Thai on 49th, which is also good.

If they want Chinese, Szechuan Gourmet is really the way to go. 39th St. between 5th and 6th. That'll also be well within their budget. They should stick to spicy dishes there, too.

If they want something not spicy, they could consider Ariana Afghan, right across the street from Wondee, on 9th Av. between 52nd and 53rd. That would probably come to about $60/person. I'm not sure they serve beer, though.

Another interesting but non-Asian cuisine that's well represented in Hell's Kitchen is Ethiopian. I had a great meal at Meskerem, 47th just off 10th, several weeks ago. Figure about $25/person, including alcohol (we shared a bottle of tej - delicious mead - three ways).
