I need a a great chinese restaurant with a private room that can host a family gathering. My grandfather passed away and one of his final requests is that the family get together and have great chinese food ( his favorite) and talk about his life. We were thinking Shun Lee Palace but it is very pricey but something in that vain would be great. We just need some place that is comfortable and the service is good; some where were we could sit and talk and not feel rushed. We are will to pay for this type of meal but i just cant justify spending six dollars on a egg roll. NYC or Queens is best easy parking is essential because some people coming have disablities.Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post and responding to it. S

I believe that Dim Sum Go Go has a private room. It's much much much better than SL and despite the name is not just about Dim Sum.

I would head to Flushing; there is plenty of parking in municipal lots and I know of at least one open air private lot, next to Ocean Jewels restaurant. I am sure that Fu Run has a private room; perhaps most of the restaurants in the area have them. I love Fu Run but there is some spicy food on the menu. For Cantonese, Imperial Palace might do the trick.
Certainly head to Queens!

Flushing - I generally think flushing is better for this b/c the restaurants are bigger. If you're specifically looking for a private room id go to flushing at get one at ocean jewel, their private rooms are very nice (i've had a private room there before) although the food at imperial palace is better, but i dont think they have private rooms (imperial palace is the best chinese restaurant in NYC in my opinion)

Manhattan - if you're in manhattan, then request the upstairs room at cantoon garden (i happen to think its the best cantonese in the manhattan).

avoid shun lee, food is awful and its expensive for what it is

How is the upstairs room at Cantoon? I love the food, but find the restaurant kind of harsh looking for a family occasion with the fluorescent lights and thin plastic tablecloths.

I agree with those that say that you'll find more room in Flushing. Cookingmama, I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you guys find the right place and share some memories over a wonderful meal.

Yes, Ocean Jewels would be better than Fu Run. The private room at Fu Run is bare bones.
If you eat at OJ, you can park for free in the large open air lot net to the restaurant.
