Where to find a good Deli and Italian Bread??

Hi,

A recent transplant from the North East coast, I am having a hard time finding a good deli, ie one which doesn't weight the meat on a postage stamp, has good crusty Italian bread (not soft French), etc. I've been to Claro's in Tustin and that's not a bad place but looking for others. Italian or Jewish style deli would be great! I searched this sight but didn't see too much...thought I would post and inquire anyway.

Much obliged for any suggestions, willing to drive a bit to satisfy the craving but near Irvine would be a bonus.

Thx in advance!

FYI - went to International Meats & Deli today in Garden Grove on Stanford (A small Hungarian deli/butcher) - very good home made kielbasa there, but you better like garlic! But who doesn't???

A-1 in San Pedro is a great traditional Italian deli and market, but they don't carry the plethora of choices you find at Bay Cities in Santa Monica.
Joseph's bakery in San Pedro has great Italian bread. They're closed on Mondays and usually run out of bread by noon. They also do a thick, cheese pizza by the slice (or square, actually) around lunchtime or to order and have very authentic Italian cookies.

Really like A-1 too...good prices on Caffe Kimbo espresso, Rega canned beans, fresh cuts of parmesan, a decent bread selection...just wish they carried Latini pasta.

Thanks for the tip on Joseph's cookies & pizza :-)

I forgot to put Joseph's address:
        Joseph's Bakery 1027 S. Meyler St. San Pedro Tel: (310) 833-1921
Be prepared, it's not your typical bakery, or I guess it is typical, just caught in a 1960 time warp (complete with pics of Padre Pio and maybe even a Kennedy...?!). It's in a residential area and if you blink while driving, you'll miss it. Portofino Bakery is on Meyler, too, but I'm not sure if they sell retail and I'm not sure if they're still there? (If they are, then A-1 probably carries their bread?)

Awesome! Thanks to all for the replies, looks like I'll be gassing up my bike and riding up to LA. Hmmm, judging by the posts, maybe I should move up to that county for the food alone!

OC has its own Italian deli, and I think it's markedly better than Claro's:
        Cortina Italian Mkt.
        (714) 535-1948
        2175 W Orange Ave,
        Anaheim, CA 92804
(on the north side of Orange, just east of Brookhurst)

There's a good "general" deli with an amazing array of soda pop in Garden Grove:
        Zlaket's Market
        (714) 534-2188
        12921 Main St,
        Garden Grove, CA 92840
(a half-block north of GG Blvd.)

And there's a good European-style deli (German/Polish, etc.) in Orange:
        Mattern Sausage & Meats
        (714) 639-3550
        4327 E Chapman Ave,
        Orange, CA 92869
        (cross street: Hewes)

If there's a servicable Jewish deli in OC, I have yet to find it, and I've lived here most of my 49 years.

Try Bay Cities Italian Deli (the Godmother sandwich is to die for) - they have fresh baked Italian bread on the premises. Its in Santa Monica on Lincoln (between Broadway and Colorado) - not far from the beach. I'm from the East Coast too. Good luck!

If you don't mind driving to LA, the Eagle Rock Deli on Colorado Blvd. is one of the best Italian Delis in town. Their Sat. only foccacia bread and semolina bread are great and so are their french bread and rolls. Their deli meat is so reasonable and of high quality as well. And the desserts drive me crazy.

Maybe a little closer is Bay Cities deli in Santa Monica. It's an Italian grocery store w/ an awesome deli. They also have a great wine selection. Their Italian sandwiches esp. the godmother (?) is to die for.

Sorry, don't know anything in the OC.
