I want to try something new and can't think of much. Some ideas were Korean, Weezie's, the Pomegranate, and Vertical. Is San, the Korean place on Queen St any good?
We want to spend around $50 a person. I'm open to any other ideas, we just want to eat well.

Vertical is going to blow your budget.

For cheap and cheerful dining I've been recommending Negroni Panini (www.negronipanini.com). Also, I think you'll be able to get in there without a rez while I might anticipate problems booking last-minute at Weezie's.

I'd like more info on San too.

Pomegranate is pretty good but I find it a bit pricey for what it is. My Persian friend says it is one of the best in the city and it is like home cooking for her.

I haven't tried the others on your list but you will probably enjoy Pomegranate

There is also Darvish Restaurant Tempus 508 Yonge Street, Toronto, ON M4Y 1X9 for really good Persian food.

This is slightly over your budget, but I think this is kind of fun & cool, plus there is entertainment on Fridays.

As for San -- I can't remember where but I had heard it changed ownership and while it used to be very good it's gone downhill. Could be wrong -- would be interested in hearing from other CH-ers.

If you don't mind a little drive, you should head directly to Manna for Korean food. Bring cash or debit. It's located on Dundas, just west of where Burnamthorpe ends. There is an active thread on this casual and cheap chowfind. It's very pleasant and has dynamite food. The only alcohol served is soju, but the tea is delicious and you can dine there before heading elsewhere for drinks and dessert.

Thanks for all the input. Weezie's only had an 8:45 reso, which didn't work with our schedule. Negroni Panini will be saved for lunch next week. The Pomegranate is still a little tempting, I just wish the pictures on their website looked more appealing. But I think we'll go to Bloor St. and see what looks nice for Korean. Arcadiaseeker, your link helped a lot.

I'd go to Pomegranate's sister restaurant right beside it.

Sheherzade Grill. They do more meat oriented Persian dishes - mainly kebabs. I recommend getting abgusht. Never disappointed.

If you're headed to Bloor for Korean, I'd recommend Il Bun Ji. They have a large and varied menu. I'd suggest that you stick with the Korean choices, vs. Japanese. They are clearly Korean and that's what they do best. I love their spicy fish soups. They do a great Hwe Dup Bap and the Bi Bim Bap is good too. Bulgogi and Kalbi are cooked in the kitchen. I haven't had them.

You can probably call to reserve a table, but I've found that if you arrive between 6:00 and 8:00, you'll have no trouble getting a table. The place fills up later in the evening.

I'll try Sheherzade Grill some other night.

Ka-Chi is awesome, but it's more of a homey type of place. They have the best pork bone soup and seafood pancake. Great prices and great value!
