My friend and I want to try it since it is said to be a cornerstone of NY eating.

A) Is open on Friday evenings? Until when?

B) And perhaps most importantly, is there anywhere near the cart where people can SIT down with their plates and enjoy the meal. Perhaps with a nice dessert place nearby for a bite afterwards?

If you mean the famous cart on 53rd and 6th SW corner across from the Hilton, there's some planters and ledges you can sit on, but not a whole of tables or chairs available.

It's open quite late -- until 4am.

For dessert, I'd go to Kyotofu, which serves Asian-influenced desserts.

Yup, there are wood benches and granite seats and tables outside the UBS building. I usually walk my food back a few blocks and eat it there. It's nice and cold there at 2am, but I don't mind.

If you're coming from out of town, get a room at the Sheraton or Hilton. Seriously--sitting on a planter is the only immediate option and not my idea of an enjoyable meal.
