<content>Are there any restaurants that would be serving food at 10:30 pm on a Thursday night? Ended up at the Red Flame on W 44th on a previous visit, which closed around 10 pm IIRC. Is Via Brasil a good bet? According to its website, it closes at midnight on Thursdays.
http://www.viabrasilrestaurant.com/

Would be fine with any type of cuisine (diners, restaurants, take-out- casual or somewhat dressy) as well as with wine bars that serve food. Would prefer mains to be less than $30, and appetizers to be less than $20.

Thanks for any of your ideas.

<content>Casellula is just a little bit west of your parameters (two blocks west of B'way at 9th Ave and 52nd St.), but it's worth the walk, I think. It's a wine bar with wonderful cheese pairings and excellent small plates. They're open until 2 a.m. Menu here: http://www.casellula.com/menus.html They don't take reservations, but it's usually not too hard to find a seat at the bar.

Kyotofu (also on 9th Ave near 49th St.) is open until 1:30 a.m. on Thursdays. They serve lovely desserts and some decent Japanese-influenced small plates. http://www.kyotofu-nyc.com/index.php?p=376 They do take reservations and it's probably a good idea to get one ifyou want a table. They also have some bar stools at the front.

Sakagura (43rd between 2nd and 3rd Ave... just east of Lexington) is open until 11:30 and I *believe* serves food until close, though please call to check. It's primarily a (very good) sake bar with some decent izakaya-type offerings. Reservations are pretty much mandatory.

Other places you could look into: Hell's Kitchen Restaurant (nuevo Mexican, 9th ave and 47th; http://www.hellskitchen-nyc.com/entree.html) and FIve Napkin Burger (9th ave. and 44th; http://www.fivenapkinburger.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=234&amp;Itemid=6). I like Hell's Kitchen; I've never been to FIve Napkin Burger, but hear good things.

In general, as you've probably deduced from the addresses, 9th Ave. is a pretty happening place, foodwise, from the lower 40's or so up to about 58th St.. It's not too far west of your preferred area. If you don't mind the extra two blocks and enjoy browsing before buying, walk up 9th ave and see what catches your eye.

[Never been to Via Brasil, but by reputation, it's supposed to be a solid, home-style restaurant serving simple, but competently prepared food. If you go, I'd love to read a report back!]</content>

<content>If you can stretch one more block east to Third Ave., I highly recommend Sarge's (between 36th &amp; 37th Sts.) since they're open 24 hours a day. Great deli (especially the fatty pastrami--best in NYC (IMHO)), chopped liver is wonderful too, as is the noodle pudding. They have a full menu too.</content>

      <content>Thanks so much ;-)

I appreciate all your recs on 9th, cimui. In the past, I remember being a little overwhelmed by all the options when I was in that area. And in a past thread, when I was looking for nuevo Mexican food, Hell's Kitchen was one of the recs. Hope to finally get a chance to try it out! Casellula, Kyotofu, and Sakagura also sound promising. I know my friend I'm travelling with likes wine &amp; small plates, but not sure about Japanese. Would Kyotofu and Casellula likely be fairly busy at 11 pm on a Thu, if they are open until 1:30 am and 2 am, respectively?

Thanks for the rec for Sarges, ellenost. I've walked past this place many times, but have never stopped in to eat. Thanks for mentioning specific dishes they do well! Much appreciated</content>

<content>Both Kyotofu and Casellula catch the post-theater crowd, so there's a chance that both will be a bit busy on a Thursday around 11 p.m. I don't know for certain, since I usually go earlier on weekdays. Kyotofu isn't usually a problem to get into despite the small size. They serve a few passable wines, but their sake and soju selection is a lot stronger. Casellula OTOH can have some annoying waits at times, but the rewards for your patience are great.

I agree with ellenost that Sarge's has *excellent* pastrami and chopped liver!! (I also love their very thick latkes.) It's a great recommendation. But do be forewarned that the decor isn't much to speak of and the service can be a bit brusque. (I personally don't mind since all I want to look at and talk to is the food, anyway. :)

There are lots and lots of restaurants that are open late and I'm sure there's something else that suits I'm not thinking of. So please let us know if you have any additional preferences for cuisine! Toronto hounds are the best and I owe y'all some good recs. </content>
