I'm new to south OC where it appears that "nothing is real". Is there anywhere in south OC where I can get a scoop of real ice cream? Not that blue Moo stuff that claims to be "real", and not that national chain that will mix any candy into your gooey overly sweet "ice cream". But a real scoop shop that makes it's own on-site and is not part of a franchise.

Strickland's is freshly made frozen custard, not ice cream, so they won't have very many flavors on any given day. But I think you'll like it, it's in Irvine.

Half-priced shakes from 4 to 8 on Mondays!

Although it is a small chain, Strickland's is very good, especially their turtle sundae, which they can also make into a shake with the nuts on the side. (If the guy hesitates, tell him, "But you did it for Harry Nile!" He might reply, "But we gave him plenty of grief for asking." ;-)

Incidentally, they haven't made "custard" since World War II. Their product is top-quality soft-serve ice cream; see http://www.stricklands.info/base.cfm?page_id=1057 for the story.

As kevin notes below, Hans' is another fine place. I get out there only about once a year, so I can't offer current information.

Farrell's is exactly what I don't want. I'm looking for the anti-Farrell's, anti-ColdStone, anti-Maggie Moo's, etc. Just good quality product, not clever gimmick.
