Sneaky's BBQ - anyone tried it?

Has anyone tried Sneaky's BBQ? Apparently they are delivery only but have been getting pretty good reviews on Yelp.

Looking for some decent Q in the area....

  1. Have not been to Sneakly's, but here is an ongoing thread re: BBQ in SF:

The consensus is there are a few good, but no great places.

    1. I have tried it several times. It is a very good take on North Carolina style BBQ. The ribs are excellent: they use a lot of dry rub and I think the ribs are so good that you don't even need the sauce. The pulled pork is the best I've had in CA. It made a Nashville native weep with tears of joy. I haven't tried their chicken.

Sides have been hit or miss. Mashed sweet potatoes were good (I don't think they have them this week). Collards were good: tender and chile-flecked with good pot liquor. Although if you know how to cook greens you might be better off making your own and putting that money towards more meat. The last time I got their coleslaw it was a spicy version, kind of like the slaw on the Bakesale Betty's fried chicken sandwich, which was weird (to me) with the Pulled Pork. I was looking for a hit of creamy mayo to balance the vinegary meat & sauce.

Also, they are nice, friendly guys and they've always showed up on time with the order, which is a plus.

If you're in BBQ survey mode, they are definitely worth a try.

      1. I tried it not long after they started. All the food comes cold. I reheated in the microwave as recommended.

The ribs were slightly smoky, had a nice secret-mix spice rub (some bites seemed to have a hint of habanero / Scotch bonnet flavor ), a good chile bite, and the meat was almost falling off the bone. To my taste, the sauce, vinegary and fruity with a very slight sweetness, overpowered the meat, though it was good with some very dark, crispy, crunchy end pieces. But since the sauce came on the side, this was no problem.

The pulled pork had a smoky, vinegary aroma, a nice juicy, gamy flavor (though they tasted less smoky than they smelled), and like the ribs was quite lean compared with most of the 'que I eat. Again, I preferred the pork as it came, so mostly left the sauce on the side.

The mac and cheese tasted fine, though the texture got a little weird from being nuked. A gratin dish in a toaster oven or a covered saucepan over low heat might work better. Personally I'd make my own instead.

Both vegetable dishes were fresh and healthy-tasting. The collards were expertly prepared, soft but not overcooked the way BBQ-joint greens often are. They were short on seasoning, but a splash of the sauce corrected that. The cole slaw was classic, crunchy, with only the barest hint of sweetness in the dressing, making a nice foil to the rich pork.

The food even comes cold if you eat there?

Am I reading between the lines correctly that you thought the 'que was unusually healthy, but actually pretty tasty and well-executed?

          1. re: SteveG

There is no there. Delivery only.

Nothing to read between the lines. "Healthy" is just a bit of redundancy regarding the fresh, not overooked vegetables.

The baby backs were delicious and well executed, no complaints, though I prefer spareribs, still slightly adhering to the bone, and smokier. Definitely worth a try.

Thanks guys. I'll hit 'em up and report back!

As you can see, this is literally a backyard operation.

          2. Ordered last night. All in all it was probably the best BBQ we've had in the area. The chicken was perfect - tender and juicy with nice kick. The ribs were nice and meaty, almost fall-off-the-bone. Collards were amazing, much like Robert said.

They also gave me a sample of their SPICY sauce, which is new. It was super hot but the taste was great. I think there's habaneros in it.

We'll be ordering again. And I think they're the only BBQ place in the area that uses real quality meats - all-natural pork and free-range chickens.

              T-Rex uses quality meat.

I know Bo's in Lafayette uses Niman Ranch beef for their brisket.
