Hello! I'm new to the boards here. Have lived in Vancouver for the past 2 years, and I am in search of a restaurant that can easily handle a group of 10-12 people where we can all be seated around the same table.

We've already been to the Afghan Horsemen and East is East, neither of which were that good. We have a couple vegetarian consideraitons to take care of in this group and need the restaruant to be in Vancouver in an area from UBC to no farther than Commercial Drive and 41st avenue or past downtown.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! :-)

Welcome, eternalcanadian! When I'm looking for a place like this, some form of Chinese is my go-to because of the preponderance of large round tables. You're limiting yourself a bit with your geographic parameters in that department by leaving out Richmond. We recently had a very tasty meal at the Grandview on Fraser near 25th -- somewhat Canadianized Szechuan but good quality and veg options deffo available (love their veg mushu for example).

There is the newish Shanghai Village on Cambie between 16th and 17th that has been pretty slammed since it opened that might work too -- we actually haven't been able to eat there dropping by twice! Not much intell online...

For non-Chinese food, the Alibi Room, the Irish Heather and Salt all have long tables that can seat 10+. These are of course downtown, so if you mean to include downtown by "past downtown" then these fall within your geographic constraints.

Another thought line is some Japanese places have tatami rooms, not that I can throw out any names right now but some of those places can fit quite a few people into them (10-12 would be fine).

Hapa on Robson has a round table that can fit maybe 10. Guu w Garlic has a Tatami room on the left that may fit 10 (but tightly).

Concurring with grayelf - I default to Chinese restaurants if sitting 10-12 "around the same table" is a requirement. If "along the same table" is acceptable, then peter.v's recs (and many others) will work.

Guu in gastown also has a long table that would accomodate...for my husbands Holiday Party last year we went to Italian Kitchen (about 20 people)-ok food but nothing great....

Aplogies for the confusion. The North Shore, Richmond, Surrey, etc. would not work for us. All of us live in the the UBC-Downtown-Kitsilano-Commercial-Kerrisdale area. So easy access by public transit would be very good!

What about the Water Street Cafe and Rhizome? The Rhizome has a very limited menu though, and this is for dinner.

When I ate at DB Moderne earlier this summer, there was a party of at least 12 close to us. The restaurant had pulled some tables together. The group was essentially sitting around one table, although the layout was rectangular so that people at one end of the table couldn't talk to people at the other end (not without shouting, anyway).

Anyway, my meal at DB Moderne was awesome...cannot wait to get back there.

I haven't been to the Water Street Cafe in a very long time - maybe 10 years now. I have not been to Rhizome. I had a look at their menu - it looks more like a soup and sandwich place than a dinner destination.
