I have also avoided Del Posto due to many negative reviews. With so many good alternatives, I don't think you need to worry. Some suggestions:

Scarpetta
Convivio
Locanda Verde
Pepolino
SD26 (I haven't tried it yet, but it looks very promising)
Marea (haven't tried yet either but gets some great reviews)

I'm not including Babbo and Lupa due to the difficulty of reserving on short notice.

I'd pass on Del Posto and try any on rrems' list (except for Marea - had a rather average overpriced meal there and truly think it's over-rated).

Alto is worth adding to the list as well.

One caution: atmosphere at Locanda Verde is very different from Del Posto, Alto, Convivio, Scarpetta. It is very loud and packed, while the others are a little more of a fine dining experience.

I agree that Locanda Verde is not really "fine dining". Neither are Pepolino and Lupa, but I threw them in because they all have really good food. You are right that the OP is probably looking for something more upscale.

Avoid Del Posto. You will feel ripped off and I would consider the other options already recommended here.

Batali's best restaurant is Babbo and it blows Del Posto out of the water.

I went to Del Posto and had the meal of a lifetime. It was spectacular. Caveat: I was on a generous expense account and wasn't paying the bill, so money was no issue. Knowing that going in may have changed the vibe. But, everyone at our table walked out of there being like "was dinner seriously that good?". One of the top culinary experiences of my lifetime.
