Any recommendations for restos in or near Monterey Bay. Nothing too high-end, but good at what they do. I tried to go to the Chowhound links but just get Monterey Market suggestions. Thanks

Peppers for Mexican is a joke Papa Chevo's is the best Mexican food in the land. Italian would have to be the Loose Noodle in Monterey. Billy Quon's Volcano Grill in Carmel Valley for steak, but waling station works if you can't make it out there. Le Coq D'Or in Carmel for french.

Hi thiscabwasrare, guess the old saying applies here...."different strokes for etc etc...". Have you tried Peppers fish tacos? Throws me right back south of the border.
I agree with Le Coq d' Or, however I would go there for German, not French cuisine...great Wiener Schnitzel.

I like Christopher's in Carmel. I ate there about a month ago when in town. Nice little spot with some interesting fusions going on. That whole area of Carmel has a ton of these neat little 20-30 seaters. You might want to take a day and just walk around there trying appetizers at places for fun.

If you can make it to Carmel Valley, Cafe Rustica is a pretty much a must visit.

Passion Fish is also a good dinner choice as is the Whaling Station. Menu at the WS is pretty extensive on fish and steak. A lot to choose from and I've never had a bad meal there. You could do a little Cannery Row site seeing and head over there for an early dinner.
