I have a friend in town for just one night for business, he's staying by the airport and I was planning to meet him for dinner and a few drinks somewhere out on Rt. 1 (in the Kowloon area of Rt. 1, preferably - but not at the Kowloon, as I would like to sleep tonight).

Any thoughts, recommendations, ideas? I know it won't be anything great...but is there somewhere decent?

Some may disagree, but I have had good luck at Jimmys Steerhosue in Saugus ( Rte 1 north, just before you get to Lynnfield). I enjoy their crabmeat pie, and their rice is wonderful- creamy with spinach- more like a risotto than plain rice. I think the secret is lots of butter. The prices are great, too.

I would also recommend Jimmy's - their prime rib and broiled scallops are really good. Other options would be Out of Asia or Angela's for pizza - my husband and I always split a half bacon half mushrooms and eggplant - yum!

I have been to Jimmy's several times and I highly recommend it. I also like the Border Cafe just after the Kowloon. ( they moved) They make the best margaritas.... yummm!!!

The first few off the top of my head that aren't Kowloon:
Border Cafe
Hilltop
Hooters
Polcaris
The 99
Jimmys
Out of Asia
Continental
If you go a little further up into Lynnfield I'd go to Brothers Kouzina. A cool, quiet little bar area and great greek food. That would be my choice.
Good luck.

I know others disagree, but we had a very nice dinner at the Mt. Vernon at the Ship last week. My steak and my friend's prime rib were perfectly cooked and very flavorful. There were warm popovers and the creme brulee was perfect. One tiny quibble was the small salad with a 50 cent surcharge for a tiny cup of blue cheese dressing. The salad was fresh and had a nice variety of lettuces though.
