Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in France (including Paris, Nice, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Marseilles)

Dessert in Paris on a rainy day?

Is there a good place to go where one can sit down and enjoy a slice (or five) of dessert and a hot drink? I know there's Paul and Laduree but that's not really what I'm looking for. I've been dying to try Gregory Renard's shop but I imagine there aren't any tables there? What about Conticini? I'm in the 18eme but will travel far and wide for a cozy treat. Merci!

          Nice list Dodo. I would add that Millet on St Dominique has a superb financier. I often go there for a delicious salad at lunch time and a little something for dessert. The prices are high but the product is excellent. I think the very best financier are the mini-financier at Kayser, particularly the "nature" but there isn't any table service.

              Carette just opend a second patisserie/salon de thé at 25, Place des Vosges.

              • No tables in Renard, barely enough space to stand, if there are 2 of you;
                My pick is Genin on Rue Turenne in the 3rd by Oberkamp metro. Lovely room for great chocolate chaud and a millefeuille or two, great service as well. No room at Conticini either. Park nearby though.

                    It's been many years, but I remember brownies at Angelinas?

                        While you are at Genin pick up some of his fabulous caramels.

                            If you have a pastry and tea/cafe or chocolat chaud at Genin, you also are given a selection of their fabulous chocolates as a surprise treat!

                                All of your replies made my day! Dodo, I think I'll frame that beautiful list. I'm a huge caramel fan so I believe Genin gets my vote for the day.

                                    If you can afford a dessert or five and a hot drink at Genin, will you marry me? Seriously, it is a stunning room and my first thought when I walked in to buy caramels was "I'm coming back to treat myself to a sit-down here."

                                        Mangeur, it may turn out that all I can truly afford is one caramel. I will go to this amazing Genin tomorrow, armed with a healthy credit card.

                                                So, I'm just back from Genin. Swoon! My appetite was not as Incredible Hulk-like as I would have preferred, so I only managed to eat one scrumptious freshly-prepared millefeuille a la vanille with my coffee plus the extras that Nancy S referred to. But, I did select 2 eclairs and a modest bag of caramels to take home. The caramels with bits of almonds inside are so divine! I will certainly go back, but maybe next time with fellow Hounds? I wonder if any of you would be up for a afternoon of desserts. Will start another thread...

                                              On Monday evening at Le Cinq all the Pudlo award winners were there giving out samples. Genin was there with a trash can of caramels, l did very well; yippee.

                                                  Are you bringing any home?

                                                    1. re: ChefJune

                                                      Since that evening l have been 'Johnny Caramelseed' spreading them everywhere. If any left, yes they come home. Monsieur Genin has been pleased with me lately, as l have been taking a lot of people to his store so he makes my millefeuille personally. As l stated earlier, his passionfruit caramels are the best piece of candy l have ever had. He also has fruit gels and the banana is a work of genius, light, not starchy and truly banana essence.

                                                        1. re: Delucacheesemonger

                                                          Well, you can guess that is on my "Essentials" list for the next trip!
