Are you looking for a restaurant or snacks to have at home? For my money, no one can beat Trader Joes-think cheese and charcuterie boards, with a mushroom and garlic pizza, hummus and pita chips, nuts, olives and prosecco, all for under $30.

Try Vietnamese sandwiches from Bahn Mi Che Cali in Rosemead. You can get three sandwiches for about $5.50. The bread has an actual crunchy crust unlike those in most chain sandwich stores.

Not sure if SGV or Little Saigon is within reach, but most of the banh mi places in these areas are extremely competitive in their pricing. Buy two banh mi, get one free; buy one boba tea, get one free - you get the picture. Also, the prepared food items on the counter like goi cuon and banh cuon are bargains. We stopped by banh Mi & Che Cali on Valley in Alhambra a few weeks ago on a really hot Saturday afternoon to pick up a light dinner to go for seven. We picked up three banh mi, two orders of banh cuon, two orders of goi cuon, and an order of bunh cha for something like $20 and change - I think we also had four orders of boba tea as well. I had to ask the person behind the counter if she rang us up correctly - she looked puzzled with a, "what - you want to pay more?" kind-of look. I almost feel guilty paying these near-impossibly low prices. On top of that, no tip jar to be seen anywhere. This Westsider is constantly shocked & awed at the quality/price ratio in these areas...
