Breed Street Vendors update

Last night Dommy and I both found Breed St vrndors in different parts of Boyle Heights. I saw a message that Dommy had found Antojito's Carmen, who used to be at a table on Breed St., alonside the B of A, near Cesar Chavez. She was eating a quesadilla of huitlacoche.

I got a hold of Nina, the DF style stand that used to be in the parking lot, and she told me they were at Chicago St.(1 block west of Breed) just north of 4th St. Upon arrival around 8:30PM last night I also found the street crepes stand, the barbacoa guys, a tamales vendor, someone with gelatins, and of course Nina's Df style street food. A comforting gordita of corn fungus(huitlacoche) and all is well.

As many here know, Breed St. has been shut dwn by the police weekend after weekend for the past few months and now has been completely broken up. The pressure has been coming from local restaurants in Boyle Hts. that have been hit hard as well as other restaurants around LA by the current economic situation.

I'm still looking for the woman who makes the tacos de guisdo that I used to call the Jarocha(person from Vera Cruz), but found out from Nina that she's from Guererro.Anybody seen her? She always had rice and hard boiled egg tacos and cecina, among others.I will be cruising the neighborhood soon looking for the pozole stand as well.

They're out there scattered around Boyle Heights, those of you who've been and are interested in trying the best Mexican street food in LA, they could use your support. Nina said they are looking for a permanent place for the vendors, until then they are trying to hang in there.

For now you can follow Nina's DF style, Hello Lupe pancakes(street crepes), Rodolfo's Barbacoa, all favorite stands of mine, and a few others on twitter. They at Chicago/4th Friday through Tuesday from 6PM-11PM.

Report back if there are any other Breed St exiles you come across, por favor.

  1. Antijito's Carmen along with 3 other venders were holed up in the Federacion Mexico Unido Hall on César Chavez around the corner from the old Breed Street spot. The food was Excellent the atmosphere was lacking mostly because there was no ventilation for all the cooking which was going on, plus someone brought in a Karaoke setup and it was way too loud.

    Federacion Mexico Unido Hall.

Tacos Al Vapor, a Churro Vendor, A Bacon Wrapped Dog Vendor and I think that was it.

    2. Went again to Nina's last night for a huarache of flor de calabaza, so delicious. Also, barbacoa tacos with consome, and a fried plantain banana split fro Lupe.

Around the corner on Breed and 4th was another set of vendors, potato tacos, etc.

On 1st and Breed in the parking lot on the west side of the street is the truck that has been there for a while. They also do huaraches, etc.Very good food there too.

        1. Thanks for the update. Good to hear not everyone has been driven out by the good ol' LAPD. Thanks, LAPD, for protecting us! Good grief!

Right, how about "protecting and serving" good food for a change.

Get out there when you can, BearCity.

          2. Any idea about where the fresh churros guy(s) went? I'm thinking of the one that set up at the northernmost tip of the parking lot.

If you're talking about the guy that was right next to the Barbacoa stand, I haven't seen him. There were some other vendors at 4th and Breed, but I was looking for pozole and tacos de guisado, my churro sensor was off. I will let you know if I come across them.

Last night, Nina was back at Cesar Chavez and Breed St, Just South of CC. She was the only vendor. Yummy!
