How long is short drive? Inn at Little Washington, search board for recs. While not a "country inn" but is in historical building-Volt. Friends love L'Auberge, I haven't been. Also Furnace Inn, Elkridge MD.

Tried L'Auberge Provencal last summer. Beautiful place & setting, however the food and service left a lot to be desired for the price. We really wanted to like the place, but left disappointed.

Shepherdstown, WV is a nice drive and has a few nice restaurants. Search this board for recommendations.

The Restaurant at Patowmack Farm may also fit your requirements.

Interesting. I am not a fan of L'auberge Provencal having had a very similar experience. Your comment, "we really wanted to like the place, but left disappointed" sums it up for us also. Patowmack Farm is another matter. I wrote this about Beverly's enchanted hillside tiki torched tent in 2002: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/165704 Several years later she put up a permanent structure and dramatically changed the ambience. She also changed chefs. But Patowmack Farm was never about an incredible dinner; rather it was an incredible experience that differed from almost anyplace else. Loudoun County had a huge influence on her and her need to put up the permanent structure. It is still good. But at one time it was a truly special place-like few others.

I have always enjoyed Antrim 1844 in Taneytown, MD. They are also having some good specials if you want to stay overnight.
