After standing on line to get bagels from the St-Viateur bagel shop, we were wandering around town and came across Beauty's Lunchette around noon on a sunny Sunday and found a line out on the street? What's up with that? Is it known for something particular. I saw the APDC vs Cosmos thread recently and saw it mentioned, but why it's worth lining up for wasn't really specified.

Why do I care? I've got to take my husband out for a special birthday breakfast tomorrow and was wondering if it should be our destination. And hoping on a Monday it wouldn't be as crowded.

I haven't been since I was a kid so I can't really comment personally, but the general sense I get these days is that it's perhaps overrated and is coasting on its reputation as a Montreal institution - it's been around since 1942. You might want to check out this thread for some thoughts:

There's nothing wrong with it -- it's a decent breakfast joint. I guess people line up for the ambiance more than the food... not worth a long wait, IMHO.

As for a special breakfast, it all depends on how you define special. A trip to a local institution might be worthy, as long as you don't expect to be wowed by the food.

As for a Monday morning: there probably won't be a line out the door, but it seems pretty busy most mornings.

Beauty's is pretty good, if a tad inconsistent. It's not the most comfortable place to linger at though. Monday mornings are kind of rough as a lot of the better brunches etc. aren't available :\

Really not recommended. Especially for a special occasion. The food is nothing special and the service is shabby because it's so small and busy. Expect to feel rushed. They are totally coasting on their reputation.

We went to a restaurant near where we were staying, the recommendation of the owner of the apartment we rented, La Passe Compose, at 950, rue Roy est. My husband enjoyed his eggs with a selection of breakfast meats and I had the yogurt and fruit platter. When they say an abundance of fruit, they mean it. The platter also came with a bagel and granola. The fruit was juicy and tasty, not just a throw away for vegetarians. The cafe au lait was lovely. The birthday man agreed it was a good choice.

For the search engine, it's Le Passé Composé (literally "the composed past" but also also the French name for the past or present perfect tense). www.passecomposerestaurant.com
