Does anyone know where one can purchase tempeh burgers in the Boston area? I checked whole foods and while they have some tempeh products, no tempeh burgers. Any leads?

I have never had a Tempeh burger but your post peeked my interest. I have given up meat in the past few months and have been trying to find alternatives. Are they tasty? I do miss a good burger. Veggie burgers vary so much by brand and it is hard to find a good one.

If you miss meat in your spaghetti sauce and/or chili, I highly recommend SmartGround. WF carries it. Some soy in it, but mostly seitan (wheat gluten). Incredibly high in protein and low in fat. Crumbles up beautifully and works great in highly seasoned sauces (such as those I recommended above). I wouldn't try it more "naked" though...tried to make shepard's pie from it once and it didn't taste so great.

One thing that has helped me very much are Chik N burgers from Quorn. I bake thm a little longer and find them to be delicious. I have tried Morning Star Crumbles and found them tolerable in a sloppy Joe recipe. My few attemps with firm tofu have proved unsuccesful. Although I have read on veggie boards that you can prepare it to taste like bacon, I can't seem to do it. My choice to give up meat came from love of animals and two books I recently read, The Omnivore's Dilemma and The Face on Your Plate. Both were fantastic reads. For a while I was only buying chicken and turkey from a farm where I could visit the animals and interact with them. After feeding chickens and turkeys at the same farm for many months, I could no longer eat them.

re: your sloppy Joe dilemma . See my endorsement of Smart Ground, above. It would be perfect for that type of recipe. It's the only "meatless crumble" that I like (don't even get me started on "Gimme Lean" nastiness!).

FWIW, I bought some actual tempeh burgers at Harvest in JP, I think....either there or City Feed up the street. This was back in the summer. They were a local (JP-made) product, I cannot recall the company's name. I was underwhelmed. They were supposedly seasoned with soy sauce but they were pretty flavorless after grilling. I know, I know, tempeh is not an inherently flavorful item but I couldn't even condimentize them into anything tasty. I love tempeh in other recipes but I didn't enjoy these.

On the other hand, I am a big fan of the Quorn products and I only wish they had not discontinued their Quorn dogs.
