I am going to be in Paris (flying solo) on Tuesday for one day, and I'm trying to figure out where to go and what to eat! I'm staying on the border of the 10th and 3rd, right near Republique.

I've been to Paris before and have seen many of the major tourist attractions, so I was thinking about hitting the Musee Rodin and the Musee Carnavalet, neither of which I have been to before. Ideally, if I could find a great spot near each museum, I could do lunch at one and dinner at the other!

I searched the board and found that Chez l'Ami Jean is highly recommended, and it's quite near the Musee Rodin. Back over on my side of town, I found several recommendations for Le Gaigne. I'm not looking to spend a fortune (i.e., no more than 40-50EU for dinner and maybe in the 20EU range for lunch) and since Chez l'Ami Jean seems to be the more expensive of the two (?) I would probably prefer that for lunch. Oh, btw, wine lists/prices are irrelevant because I have to abstain due to an early audition at the Bastille the next day. Any better suggestions?

Also, if anyone can suggest a really fantastic fromagerie and/or salumerie near Republique (or anywhere between Bastille and Gare du Nord), that would be AWESOME. I have an 8 hour train ride back to Berlin ahead of me after the audition and I need snacks!

Update: made a reservation at Le Gaigne for dinner. I also just remembered that I had dinner at Le Hangar in the 3rd the last time I was in Paris (February), which was very good - has anyone been more recently? I also emailed CAJ but I don't know if they do email reservations - I may try calling tomorrow.

Have found some recommendations for Au Petit Tonneau in the 7th as well but can't get an idea of prices - is it more or less expensive than CAJ? Also, what about D'Chez Eux? Looks a bit pricey and maybe slightly touristy?

Thanks Deluca - I just called and reserved. What's the dress code like for lunch? I will be museum hopping so will likely be in jeans if that's kosher. Dress code at dinner time for Le Gaigne would be appreciated as well!

As most small bistrots, lunch will have some businessmen very nattily dressed but you and l will be in jeans, no worries.

Excellent! I have been reading more posts and now I'm considering A la Biche au Bois for dinner instead of Le Gaigne - I like the idea of rustic, hearty, wild game heavy food and I'm a sucker for a good cheese plate, plus the price is right. Decisions, decisions!

ALBAB is way too heavy for me, been a couple times over the years and is very popular, but was not pleased there. CAJ has game now and Chez Denise has game most days, great dependable menu and you will have a lot of fun. You will talk to your neighbors, share food with them, and wind up with a very reasonable bill. If they have civet de cerf or morue auvergnate, go for it.

Argh, now I'm reading reviews of Chez Denise and it sounds terrific too-and a great atmosphere for a solo diner. Decisions decisions! My other half would love Chez Denise, though - maybe I should save it for the next time he's with me.

I only wish I'd had time to plan a restaurant itinerary the last time I was in Paris - we were there for 2.5 days and really only had one great meal (if you don't count all the bread/cheese that is).

Next to Gare du Nord is the Marché Saint Quentin. It has many wonders for your snacks in the Zug, starting with a charcutier that has some jambon de porc noir de Bigorre.
