I wrote about the culinary tour a couple of weeks ago and got only one response so we will be going to Cochon on Weds and Brigsten's on Thurs for dinner. But what about lunch recs that will not spoil dinner? Also, when we leave early Fri, we will be headed towards Fla and we have to leave early (house closing is Sat). Is there some place on the way out that we could pick up good po-boys for lunch-I guess roast beef-something cold? We will be staying in the French Quarter.

Lunch IS Commander's Palace. There is no better place on the planet to go for lunch. Period. Just ride the St Charles streetcar out there and stroll the Garden District when you're done. Dress up.

I'll also suggest Mr. B's for BBQ shimp for a lunch, but specifically that dish.

And Central Grocery muffalettas will probably travel better than most po-boys. They are meant to be room temp and get better if they're sitting around absorbing the oil from the olive salad.

It went amiss, but I was trying to post a muff suggestion at about the same time you came in with this one. It is worth trying to get them to load it up as in days of yore and pay extra.

while commander's is great, im not sure it meets his requirement to not spoil dinner.. after my most recent CP lunch i simply could not consider dinner, even 6 hours later.

for this reason i would suggest something less momentous. say, lunch at Green Goddess, or even Red Fish Grill for a plate of BBQ oysters. if poboy overload isnt an issue then Johnny's has something like 50 varieties to choose from for lunch.

+1 on getting a CG muff packed to go. They taste even better the next day, when the bun has absorbed more of the salad. Yum! Make sure you pick up some Zapp's chips to go with the muff.

If you don't want a muffaletta, you could swing down to Dong Phuong Oriental Bakery on Chef Menteur for banh mi [Vietnamese po-boys] before you cross the twin span. They also travel well.

RB poboys are served hot w/gravy. A CG muff would be excellent. Lunch: August, 3 courses $20.09, Emeril's 3 courses $19.50. Two of NOLA's best food/values.

Cold poboys used to be fairly popular, but they're now firmly in the minority as sandwich fillings go. NOLA roast beef is hot, as are the fried seafood poboys. You could shoot for a cold ham-n-cheese; the ideal beverage pairing is a pineapple flavored Big Shot soda.

If you're looking for a light lunch, you can't go wrong with a dozen or so raw oysters on the halfshell. In the Quarter I'd go to Felix's. Stand at the bar and eat em as they shuck em. Or if you're Uptown, hit Casamento's on Magazine.

Central doesn't open till 9/9:30 so if you're leaving early, buy the muff the day before.
Take Ziplocks. They last for days refrigerated.

Dong Phuoug also has just the best french bread. You could take Hwy 90 east out of the city, stop there and if you have time, stop @ Fort Pike (this just re-opened) then cross the Rigolets bridge and then go up to merge back onto I-10 in Slidell.
