Glen Ellen Now
'Tis the season to enjoy fall color in tree and vineyard; olive oil at BR Cohn; lunch, chocolate & cheese in Jack London Village; figs (this year's crop is stunning); and produce at Oak Hill Farm.
Just back from Oak Hill Farm - offered were; summer & winter squash, greens of a dozen types, parsnips, carrots large & small, 3 types of beets, 2 of eggplant, apples, quince, tomatoes (special this weekend - all types $2.50#), last of the season melons (last week's was over ripe), leeks, celery, yellow squash, peppers, handmade tortillas, herbs, broccoli and cauliflower and more. Season's honey is sold out.
But the biggest, most beautiful offering at Oak Hill Farm is their Day of the Dead altar which will only be up through Sunday. I've lived in San Francisco's Mission District & visited altars throughout the state and this one is extraordinary because of the flowers. Curtains of flowers, bowers of flowers, bunches of flowers. If you come to see altars in Petaluma & Santa Rosa, be sure to stop here too.
While not strictly food for the body, it's food for the soul. Last year customers brought in photos and momentos of deceased loved ones and this year there is space on the altar for more.
And, if you you're in the mood for more Mexico, be sure to stop for Mexican ice cream and paletas, just a few miles east on Highway 12. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/635117 I'm enjoying eating my way through their cases. :
