Need "Get To Know You" Date Help

Hi Hounds....

I will be meeting someone tonight for the first time (dating website). I would like to meet somewhere like a bistro or cafe where we could sit for an hour or so and chat without the pressure of ordering a meal right away. However, should the chemistry be there, the option to order dinner would be great. Could be licensed or not....doesn't matter. I am very close to the Danforth, my date is from the west end (Keele & Eglinton). We are meeting at 7 pm tonight.

Any suggestions?

I should add that we both drive so any area of the city would be okay.

As it's a Friday, you might find some table pressure at some places. I would suggest one of the booths in the bar area at the Boiler House in the distillery (or better yet, start at Soma for some chocolate). Insomnia on Bloor does drinks and food as well, and is a nice location. If you don't mind being the one who does the driving, My Place has very good food, a bar area, and a number of eclectic seating areas. Bloor west at Jane.

Negroni! Inexpensive wines by the glass, excellent espressos, nice plates for nibbling with wine and fantastic panini. Perfect first date place.

Thank you Snarf for your recommendations. I was thinking of the Distillery but didn't know exactly where. I have heard great things about Brad Long's My Place, but I have a feeling it would be too noisy for a first date.

TorontoJo, I checked out the message thread for Negroni and it sounds absolutely perfect. My date is Italian so maybe extra brownie points? Thank you so much for your wonderful suggestion. Even if the date doesn't pan out, I will have an awesome evening out anyways.

I do think Negroni is a great early-date spot, but I do want to make one disclaimer - it tends to be quiet at dinner time. Great for conversation because you can actually hear your date, but (depending on the couple, of course) potentially awkward for a first face-to-face meeting, since there really isn't any people-watching or a long drink/munchie menu or anything to fall back on if the conversation stalls. But if you've already talked a fair amount on the phone, etc., then I think it's a good choice for a no-pressure date. And if the chemistry does strike, you'll have a great time there. :)

agreed--Negroni is a great first date place and even if there isn't a lot of people watching the staff is super friendly so you could talk to them. (as an aside I had the beef and gorgonzola sandwich for the first time this afternoon and it was fantastic--not too heavy or greasy)

A gastro-pub may work. You can have drinks and if you feel like it order food. The Queen and Beaver, Allen's or the Beer Bistro are some choices.

letteri in yorkville .... quiet , anonymous, dim light ... i met my someone there for the first time 7 months ago and now we're engaged! .... hopefully it works for you too!

There's a wine bar called Eight at the Cosmopolitan at 8 Colborne St. off Yonge just N of Wellington that could work for your needs. It's more like a small lounge that could serve as a good meeting point and then if it works out there are lots of decent restaurants in the area.

Whatever end up choosing, please let us know how it worked out! :-)

                  Hi Hounds,

So we went to Negroni for our date and the concerns about this place not being busy can be put to rest. We arrived around 7 pm on Friday and there was two or three tables already there. Within an hour, every table was taken and they had to call in extra help from Sidecar! So, Rabbit, I guess your pleas have been heard and this place will be around for quite some time.....as it should!

The food was very simple and very good. I had the prosciutto and smoked cheddar panni and my date had the chicken and fontina panni. Both came with arugula and fennel salad and a wonderful wheatberry salad...very healthy.

As mentioned, we were there on our first date and so were more interested in chatting than in ordering food...at first. Even though the place was very busy, we never once felt like we were being rushed.

The only negative comment I would have would be regarding the spot light that was set up in the parking lot across the street. It came on a couple of times and was so bright and strong, we thought it was a movie shoot. Practically burned our retina's out. But that definately was not the fault of the restaurant.

It was a wonderful suggestion and I thank everyone for the recommendations.

Oh....and the date....let's just say the food was more interesting. :(
