Russ and Daughters-the other standouts

Just ordered from Russ and Daughters again and got to thinking. Everyone knows for the best smoked fish, salmon and herrings this is the place to go. Chowhounds unanimously agree their whitefish and baked, salmon salad, chopped liver salad, bagel pudding are not to be missed. Their rugelach and babka are some of the best in the city. So for me, this is usually what I stick to when I order along with some bagels/bialys and cream cheese. Rave reviews and no complaints all the time.

Unfortunately, I don't live in NYC and have not yet had the opportunity to visit and shop in the store itself although it is high on my to do list next time I'm there. So just wondering what locals who are lucky enough to be able to shop here regularly add to their cart beside the standouts from above. In another post, I read someone said they had great eggcreams (I didn't even know they had those there), read someone picked up a lemonade and saw mentioned rice pudding. How are their other homemade salads such as tuna, egg or potato salad? I usually get the beet, herring and apple salad and this time ordered the eggplant salad as well at Josh's recommendation. I'll let you know on that one. Also added some blintzes to my order this time. How's their soups?

If everything else is half as good as what I've ordered in the past, I can't wait to try it all. For all of you who are able to stop by and shop here when you want, you are truly fortunate. I can't even get a decent bagel where I live now let alone any of the other things. Thank heavens for mail order and Chowhounds too for helping me find this amazing place.

They have these chocolate covered jelly graham crackers that I absolutely adore. You can, however, pick them up (or order online) from Economy Candy a few blocks away for about 1/3 the price. http://www.economycandy.com/store/pro...

DH lovers their whitefish and gefilte fish and their cheese blintzes are delicious as well. I LOVE shopping in their store. Such a tiny place with so much good stuff.

the gefilte at R&D (a blend of salmon & pike) is truly the best i've ever had anywhere. coupled with a jar of Gold's red horseradish it is a meal in itself.

the egg salad is outstanding- the perfect blend of creaminess, saltiness, & onioniness. no disrespect to 2nd ave deli (because i love 'em) but i don't go for the huge chunks of egg style egg salad. i can't say enough nice things about the r&d egg salad.

one thing that i would recommend to ANYONE who goes to r&d are the honey-roasted pecans. SOOOOOO good and a definite crowd pleaser

the german style potato salad is tops as well. capers, dill, & raw onion with just the right amount of vinegar, you can grab a 1/2 pound of this stuff and eat it with one of the north sea herring and you are in business

the pastrami salmon is great and a real treat...

i think i might have to go to russ right now...

Lucky you.....El Tigre- I could have definitively used your help this morning when I placed my order. Knew I should have checked with the hounds first. Everything that you just mentioned are exactly some of the things I wanted to know about. The order I just placed was actually a gift that I sent to family. Some of them are sick, going thru txs etc. and I wanted to send some of these other salads this time as well to make it easier on them, The potato salad sounds delicious as well as the pecans and other things you mentioned. My brother loved the pastrami salmon last time I sent it to him too. Oh well, I'm sure they'll love what I sent and will give not only them but me something to look forward to next time I order. Thanks again.

I've been wanting to try that pastrami salmon. Does it taste just like what it sounds like?

Never heard of those before, will have to try them. They sound yummy! Thanxs for the tip on Economy Candy too. That's another place on my list to visit next time I'm in the city along with the rest of the great places on the famous RGR LES Tour.
So glad to hear the blintzes are good too. This was my first time getting those from here. I almost ordered that whitefish this time but had to control myself. Already went over my budget but next time it will be on my list. Thanks again.

Yes, I agree. I ordered a pound of those. I got the traditional raspberry nut ones but just curious, do you like the chocolate flavored ones as much?

I find the chocolate ones a little too dry. For me the jam and nut are the way to go. On a different sublect, when you go to the store it is traditional and not at all impolite to ask for a taste before you purchase smoked fish. They are happy to do it and it is a part of the shopping experiance. Have fun.

Last time I was there they recommended getting the wasabi roe to put on top of the whitefish/salmon salad. It was excellent!!!

Bagel pudding? I haven't heard of that. What does it taste like?

I hadn't heard of it either. I learned about it too from another hound. Unfortunately, I haven't yet had it myself. The last time I got a delivery from R & D's they were out of it. I was so disappointed. I've sent it now a couple of times to my family and just asked them about it. Sister-in-law said if she didn't know would have thought it was breadpudding. Very similar. I sent them both prune and a chocolate one. Sister-in-law liked the prune better found the other one to chocolately. (For me, that might not be a problem) Will have to try both next time I order.

Once again everything in the package I sent this time from R & D's was a hit even the eggplant salad. Brother said it reminded him of something he had when he was in Israel. Very Middle Eastern. He said it was similar to a spread which I hadn't realized. Anyway, he liked it alot. Bottom line, don't think you can go wrong with anything you order from here. Well, thanks again everyone. Added all of your favorites to my list so next time I order it will be a breeze. Can't wait to try them all!
