Big fat futomaki!

Every now and then I get a craving for futomaki sushi. There's something about the sweet and savory combination of vegetables, egg, crab, pickles and that bright pink fish powder that just satisfies. Unfortunately, futomaki sushi isn't widely available. One itamae once told me that he stopped offering futomaki because it was very labor intensive to prepare all the ingredients and Americans didn't seem to ever order it.

Does anyone know any sushi restaurants in the SFV that make futomaki sushi? West SFV is better.

  1. Great question! I used to be addicted to futomaki. It's genius. I hope people answer this question.

    1. It occassionally shows up in the take away case at Mitsuwa...

Dommy, that was going to be my recommendation. The sushi case at Japanese grocery stores.

If your lucky enough to have a Japanese mom they make tasty Futomaki.

Totally, I remember picking it up once and thinking it was a neat treat! :) But since it's done in the big log style, it actually is found away from the Sushi and by the Spam Musubi and Tuna Salad Rolls (my favorite)

Is there a Mitsuwa anywhere in the SFV? If I'm going to drive into LA, the futomaki at Hide on Sawtelle is great. I was just hoping to find something on this side of the hill.

            Torrance Costa Mesa
            San Gabriel Santa Monica
            San Diego

          2. Unfortunately, it's difficult to get futomaki at a sushi restaurant. Inari (fried tofu stuffed with sushi rice) and futomaki are not traditional restaurant food which is why they are generally only for takeout from places like Mistuwa. Most sushi restaurants also don't like to serve futomaki because it is too filling. 1 roll and most people will not be able to eat anything else.

That all sounds reasonable. Hence, my original question. Where can I find it (in the SFV)?
