I'm embarassed to have to ask this, but I see no alternative. I recently bought a bottle of Johnnie Walker Gold Label at a duty free shop in Asia. I went to open it tonight and it has some weird type of cap that I've never seen before. When you twist off the cap, there appears to be some plastic insert that prevents the whiskey from flowing.

Has anyone ever seen this, and can you tell me how to open the insert?

Thanks (humbly).

If it's what I think it is, this insert is supposed to allow a controlled pour, not prevent the flow altogether. But it will prevent you from illegally refilling the bottle when it's empty (we'll cross that bridge when you get to it…)

I don't know how the mechanism works, but sometimes you have to give the bottle a good shake (upside down) to get things going.

DeppityDawg is correct. That little controlled pour device is stuck. It is made up of two parts, and the inside part is jammed. Use something small like a large needle, opened paper clip, or skewer to poke through the opening in the neck and jostle the pour device loose.
That is better than trying to shake the bottle and possibly spilling scotch everywhere.
