Food shopping + takeaway/delivery in the 5eme

Hi all,

I usually lurk on the UK board, but decided to sign-up since I need some advice about Paris. The group of people I'm travelling with is trying to save money (Them - budgetary reason, me - I know I will spend too much money on macarons...) so we plan on cooking for the majority of our meals.

Our apartment is near the Censier-Daubenton metro station, so I'd be grateful if anyone could recommend some good places to shop for food around there.

Also, are there any decent takeaways nearby, or places which allow you to order online, for days on which we're too exhausted to cook. None of us are confident enough with our French to order on the phone.

    1. Well, that's easy. There's a permanent market on rue Mouffetard where you'll find a lot of good stuff. There are three excellent pastry shops/bakeries by Place Monge: Moisan (decent bread), Le Boulanger de Monge (danish and millefeuille) and Marletti (éclairs, chocolate etc.). There's an excellent creperie too on rue Censier, Le Pot O Lait. As for takeaway, see if there's anything you like in rue Mouffetard. There are many good crepes and kebab places in rue Mouffetard. Be careful of tourist traps higher on rue Mouffetard, though.

Here's a secret: the little épicier in rue Larrey by Place Monge has the best fruits in town. Don't tell anyone (but DCM can back me up on that)

          Thank you!

I already had a list of food shops to visit, but it's harder to find recs for the basics, especially in a particular area. Looking at your post, it makes me happier that we lost a cheaper apartment in the 11th, especially combined with hearing about Shakespeare and Company nearby (mmm, food and books...)

Just a tip. There aren't many places to actually get delivered. Pizza and sushi were the only two when I lived in Paris. Pizza places include dominos, pizza hut, and speed rabbit (not sure what is in your neighborhood). If you actually go and order the pizza at the store and take it away you get twice as much for free.

Yes but they're all baad. And there are many many pizza and sushis deliverers in town now. I get a new ad in my mailbox everyday.

              • Souphie, I can't believe you neglected to tell Travelling Student about Oteiza!

You won't want to miss this gem of a store on Blvd. St. Michel, where they specialize in all sorts of yummy Basque delights, especially the jambon!

Cause that's too far. But if we're going that far, I'll have to mention Kayser and mostly Laurent Dubois, the best cheese shop in town.

It's not really too far! Especially for foods that are so excellent as that.
