Help - Woodbury CT Questions!

I'd appreciate a little guidance. My husband & I will be in the Woodbury CT area in a couple of weeks for the night, and we are looking for a relaxing, adult dinner experience. (We have little kids, but we are traveling without them - thus we are not looking to go somewhere and be surrounded by little ones.) The 3 recommendations we've had are the Good News Cafe, John's Cafe and the Woodward House. All of their menus are appealing, but I was hoping someone who'd been to any of them recently could give me some insight on their quality, atmosphere, etc? We are not looking for a "stuffy" experience, but we do appreciate good food and wine. Thanks so much!

I last went to Good News in June -- that's sort of recent. I would not call it stuffy, and the food is excellent. However -- people seem to have polarized opinions of Carole Peck, much like they do about Alice Waters. I come down on the side of liking her okay, and loving her food. Good News is open, atmosphere-wise; a little noisy at times; medium-lit, not too dark and not terribly bright; and has local art of some kind hanging around the place. Sometimes it's paintings, other times photography or sculpture. I am a little underwhelmed by her signature dish, the lobster macaroni and cheese; but have loved everything else I've had there -- been about 6-7 times over the last few years.

John's is very nice, too. I used to prefer them to Good News, but they got noisy, packed-in-feeling, and beautiful-peopley, so we stopped going. That was a couple of years ago, though, and they may have changed their setup since then. The food is excellent, IMO -- going on food alone, I'd be happy at either Good News or John's.
