To drive around Las Vegas these days can be a bittersweet experience, since it is difficult to go through many neighborhoods without seeing restaurants that have closed, including so many that were Chowhound-worthy. So a special shout-out today to a unique sight, and one that can warm the heart (as much as their food warms the internal engines). La Torta Loca (1168 East Twain) is the kind of mom-and-pop Mexican place that will not get much discussion on these boards, but they have been putting out good food at low prices for over 10 years (mostly D.F.-influenced, so Huaraches and Chavindecas can be found), and as you might expect their namesake sandwiches are first-rate (particularly their Torta Ahogada). It had been too long since I last had paid a visit, and a lunch stop brought a smile - instead of seeing yet another closed restaurant, they are still standing in a strip mall in which all other storefronts have gone vacant. Kudos to them.

Thanks for the post, QAW....When I first came to Vegas, I was working one day a week at our office right around the corner from La Torta Loca....and enjoyed a few tortas and other goodies from there. I'd venture to say its been a good year since I've been there.....Glad to say they are still going strong, and making it in a lousy location.......

I live right around the corner from La Torta Loca on Flamingo and Swenson so I was hoping to find a nice neighborhood mexican restaurant. I ordered a cheese enchilada and 3 chicken tacos with rice and beans. My enchilada seemed like it was reheated in the microwave, very little sauce and it was dry. There was literally more sour cream than anything else. the tacos were very small, mushy and were rolled which was not what I ordered. Also very small portions of beans and rice.I brought the food back and really had a hard time explaining my grievance since the only english speaking person there was a 10 yr old girl doing her homework in the dining room. The little girl told me they would not replace my order and my money would not be refunded. They gave me my food back in a bag. I just left the food it was that bad. This experience cost me $15 dollars. Still craving mexican food I went down maryland parkway towards the university and went to Roberto's but since I was pretty much robbed of 15 bucks at La Torta Loca now I could only afford 2 tacos.

This was the La Torta Loca on Twain and Maryland Parkway right next to the Boulevard Mall.
