Looking for Restaurants in Palm Springs & LA

I will be in Palm Springs for 4 days next week and LA for 1 day and am looking for some good food in Palm Springs & LA. Seems like alot of chain restaurants in Palm Springs, althought someone mentioned Hogs Breath Inn in La Quinta. Also, having hard time trying to figure out where to go in LA as there is so much to choose from. Ideally looking for Italian or American. Any suggestions? many thanks

  1. For deli with huge portions and great deli desserts (big enough for two) I like "Manhattan in the Desert"

Ran across a hole-in-the-wall BBQ place (counter seating) called Cowboy Way BBQ. The owner was on the competitive BBQ circuit. Ordered a half slab of beef ribs for $15, but they give you a whole slab (7 ribs) and some of the best BBQ beans you'll ever have.

I agree. Try the pulled pork with its soft strands and burnt ends. Cowboy Way is probably the best American BBQ for 100 miles around, certainly the best I've had in the Coachella Valley.

Babe's (in The River shopping center) is much more upscale and comfortable, and the BBQ isn't bad -- see for a puff piece that's reasonably accurate. They're infinitely better than Famous Dave's (at least the one in Redlands that I stopped at a few months ago after Babe's sister restaurant, the Slim Pig N's, went out of business -- thanks, Redlands), better than Lucille's, but not as good as Wood Ranch (to mention three roughly similar places less than 100 miles away ;-). Babe's fruit pies are among the best I've ever had in a restaurant.

    2. You didn't say Mexican, but if you have an interest try El Galito in Cathedral City. Been there many years and truly good home style Mexican food (hand made tortillas). Their chips are addicting as hell and some damn good salsa to go with them.
      Cash Only.

      1. We have moved this thread to the California board, which is where Palm Springs chow is discussed. Please feel free to post a new thread on the L.A. board covering that aspect of your visit.
